Description High ceilings, cornices moulded in the complex
forms of imagined vegetation. Once the stained
boarding of the floors would have been polished
to a mirror sheen, the windows, standing tall,
hung with a heavy wealth of curtain.

                                               Not any more.
The threadbare carpet on the floor confronts
the small electric fire in the grate. There was
elegance and glamour here, but you have left
your visit far too late. Don't try the lever for
the servants' bell!
              No bells have jangled
here since the war before the war, that
most of us have forgotten. The heir
and both his brothers were among the hordes
who found their rest in unmarked graves.

A bitter harvest that followed on so rich
promise of what might have been.
The accumulated junk obscures
the spaces that the architect devised for polite
and civilised exchanges, a dingy odour
has replaced the scent of fresh delivered
                                                     flowers.

In the distant corners of her mind
she might occasionally find some wisp of
connection, a memory she cannot recognise
or own. It fades as rapidly as it came,
a manly scent, the echo
of a once-remembered name.

You'll have to forgive all the fav-and-run I am doing, dear Alec. I have more than a hundred deviations in my inbox, around 9 of which are yours xD
The idea that the stanzas somehow interlock was interesting and provided what could be considered a more gratifying read.

Far more than a picture of changed rooms... I love how connected this piece was to lives past and present. The last stanza was heart-achingly beautiful.

I can't describe how moving I found this poem... Any words I used would be inadequate to describe the sensation.

my goodness... I'm speechless...I hate remembering places that just aren't the same anymore...an air of sadness blows through the changed rooms. Fabulous language employed, here. The bit about the imagined vegetation really touched my heart. I adore your sensitivity and skill for comparison.

Thank you, Natalie.

This faded opulence was the backdrop to my child hood. There isn't even an X to mark the spot anymore!

haunting and precise, Alec - these objects and their feelings-familiar, perched on the shoulder of our memories, whispering what once was and what could have been.

another extraordinary piece.

That final stanza serves as a gorgeous capstone for the lamenting of impermanence – and how things – unused, unloved – can fall into disrepair. Houses, people. Exquisite.

Haunting and powerful. I felt myself imagining derelict mansions of past glory. There is so much promise in things...and then they all fade away.

Such a sad piece, evocative of how we all must eventually fade. Nicely done, Alec.

An engaging piece that ushers one into that faded and mildewed bygone place.
Sights, smells and other lurking senses evoked nicely. Wonderful work Mr. Bell.
