Description When I picture it,
the pathway is deserted,
gilded in sunset.

I've never gone back. I know
that it couldn't be the same.

Another harkening

With golden shades

And rose tinted expressions

The past wears the allure of the mirage, and vanishes as suddenly too!

The sadness which is emitted from this piece is strong, and really touches me because of it. I can relate in a way, at least with previous experiences, and there are things I miss but I will not go back to that state as it wouldn't be to my benefit or those around me. But there was a sense of freedom with that person, but one I would never want to be again.

A lovely piece. One which can be taken very personally.

A powerful truth, poignantly rendered. You really can't ever go back, not to the same place. Even beyond geography and constructions changing, the people change. Oneself changes.

Herakleitos, if I recall correctly.

Although I've always wondered if it should be "Hierokleitos".

Most English texts what I think must be the Roman form of his name, Heraclitus.

Gerard Manley Hopkins the poet and Jesuit, uses the adjective "Heraclitean"

Until you mentioned it, it has never struck me as odd that I was introduced to the man as a first year undergraduate at Manchester University by the Latinate form of his name. I have checked with the Oxford Companion To Philosophy, where again the Latin spelling of his name is used.

As far as I'm aware, he's the only Greek philosopher who is given the Latin treatment.

LancelotPrice In reply to AlecBell [2011-05-08 14:31:21 +0000 UTC]

What about Sokrates and Platon? I don't know if even "Sokrates" has the correct ending. I would imagine there are other examples. The "Greek" language has no 'c', and the ending of masculine singular nouns is 'os', not 'us'. "The Greeks" called themselves "Hellenoi" [the masculine plural noun]. }uhoh, I feel the rant building{ As far as I know, their language doesn't even have an initial 'g' sound. The famed inventor of the steam turbine and power-operated doors is usually called "Hero" of Alexandria, when his name was apparently Hieron, [which is still a transliteration into Latin alphabet], which we would pronounce the way Harry Potter would say "Hi, Ron" but without the pause, which would have a different sound from the name as usually seen, and hence be a different name in actuality.
Yeah, it bothers me. These errors, whether of ignorance or of laziness, disrespect the people whose names we mangle, insulting them even in the act of honouring their achievements.

Time for a cup of tea; I'm exhausted by ranting.

A person's name should, if possible be accurately recorded, though I suspect that Arabic and Chinese authors get even worse treatment than the Greeks.

Tea sounds like a good idea

Alas, I left my microwave unattended by anything other than an external timer, while I unexpectedly went next door to see their newly acquired car. The old clockwork timer on the microwave itself could no longer turn off the voltage. Till I buy a new microwave, I have nothing else [long story] with which to boil water. I think some circuitry got baked. Damn. I loved that old microwave. Didn't have to muck about for extra seconds with membrane buttons on a featureless panel. And it had a top mounted magnetron 'firing' downwards which should minimise any radiation escaping the Faraday cage mesh at the glass door. Darn it. Damned membrane keyboards.

I use a second hand commercial one that I bough more than twelve years ago. Recently the turntable stopped turning, though this doesn't seem to have impaired its performance.

I have to see this as the first sign of its approaching end!

Quite possibly. I dislike more complication than necessary, More things to fail. Ockham's razor should be applied to mechanical and electronic design.

My little machine was secondhand [at least], and I've no idea how old it actually was. I had it for five and a half years, and the failure of its basic function was, in the end, due to a failure by me, even though set up by the failure of its worn-out internal timer.
