Description The African moon
long lost and gone,
an ocean away is
the African sun.
still, in this
sad land where
cruelly, we're enslaved,
dusk is sudden.
Night falls like a
curtain when day
is finally done.

That's when the drum
speaks its rhapsodies
setting our wearied
bodies free. As we sway,
we awake the melancholy
that's buried deep
in our hearts. Together
we share our heavy loss,
In dreams we visit
our far off lands
that none of us
will ever see.

Our desires dance
for us, desires
that flower in dreams.
Long sugarcane days
of labour fade.

The pulses of
the music
teach us
those steps
that took us
once to forgotten
states of rapture
beneath the
African Moon.

The magic of the dance - you've created an image of unspoken history that's very powerful. Nicely done.

After the poem I entered in =KneelingGlory 's Not For sale contest, I felt that I owed the subject a piece that did more than describing the enslaved as victims.

Thank you for your very positive response, Cindy

There's so, so much sadness in all that history; it's nice that you give them another voice.

The other poem was so harsh, even I found it disturbing!

That last stanza is hypnotic in meter and imagery. Well done.

Hypnotic drum rhythms must have made so much difference to their lives...a chance to dream and forget their misery !I love this part....

This is truly a piece of haunting images and spectral pain, Alec. I love it.

The second stanza, for me, is particularly beautiful.

I love the sounds of it, the subtle rhymes.

A few typos regarding capitals, perhaps: verse 1, line 5 and verse 2, line 6?
