Description 50 C40-8Ws were exactly what the doctor ordered to end 20 years of EMD dominance (minus some U28Bs in 1967) after SSE was originally an ALCO aficionado. These were ordered to slowly start to phase out the SSE’s SD39-2s due to their lack of horsepower in exchange for cost-effectiveness, which turned out to be a scam, both for the SD39-2s and SD39T-2s. SSE would soon be drawn away from EMD mostly by the 1990s following issues involving the 645E3Ms on the SSE’s SD40-2Fs, and the colossal failure of the SD90MAC-H program. The C40-8Ws would later be replaced by ET44ACs to correspond with California’s EPA Tier 4 Emissions Standards. All units remain in storage, with talks to possibly have the Knoxville Locomotive Works rebuild them to Tier 4 Emissions Standards.
