Description Comments:
World War I was a bloody war, fought in muddy trenches and overwhelmed with slaughter. Yet a few soldiers escaped this anonymous end - fighter pilots. They volunteered to fly when just going up in an airplane seemed heroic. However, most fighter pilots achieved only a few victories before they too were shot down.

Yet, there was one man, Baron Manfred von Richthofen, who liked to fly in a blazing red airplane and shot down plane after plane. His achievements made him both a hero and a propaganda tool. With 80 credited victories, Baron Manfred von Richthofen, the "Red Baron," defied the odds and became a legend in the air.

Higher, the king of the sky
He's flying too fast and he's flying too high
Higher, an eye for an eye
The legend will never die

Amen brother! Manfred must qualify as the greatest air combat fighter of all time! He had few instruments, was in an open cockpit at 60 below zero and scored victory after victory. This was combat at its most vicious and most glorious.

Love this one. Bravo. Thee's something so sad about it, the tones are very forboding. Von Richtofen has always fascinated me, this work hits all the right points and makes me want to go dig up my WW1 air war books. Thank you.

I happen to be related to The Red Baron so this was a particular interest to me. The murky and ominuous coloring really does evoke the dark bleakness of the first World War. Death upon death upon death. Manfred was lucky enough to be remembered.

It's a greatly executed painting. This stuck out when I was searching for The Red Baron because the rest on the page aren't very good.

Well done.

Germany's ace of aces. I'm no fan of nazis, but anyone that good on a fighter plane deserves some respect.

inofficial he shoot 83.

Never believe films of him like "von Richthofen and Brown" or "the blue max".

They are not showing him like he was really.

Read the Biography written from "Erik Cichon"
if you want to learn something. In german the
book is called "Auf roten Schwingen" wich means something like "on red wings"

btw, the pic is really nice!

This reminds me of Porco Rosso.. very nice, your style looks like realism, but in an abstract, collage-ish (is that the word?) storybook kind of way.

man this is wicked, i was just looking at your stock and i found the farm picture, i thought that looked really cool to start of with, i didnt know how you could do anything to it to make it look better, but hey there you are.
Its also really cool you use your own stock in so much of your work.
And just wondering, if its a simple enough answer, what did you use to make the fraying round the edge, because i think that whole old-timey fabric look to it is what makes it looks so authentic.

Oh easy... I use a grunge brush in photoshop. I cant remember which one I used since I have soo many of them, but DA has a whole collection you can download to use with photoshop. Hope that helps.

the dark shadow over the land makes this extremly moody and mysterious, like abnormal natural lighting. i love the ideas in this. very well done!!!
