Description Some time ago i was surfing the net looking for a J.S.Sargent draw for a study, and in another window i had the DA, reading some messages. Somehow (i do not remember exactly) i found this picture in DA [link] , shoot by . The light was very interesting, and i thought to myself "why not?".
This is my third experience with carcoal and contΓ© ( and a little bit of white pastels)
I have sympa-inspir permission for use his picture.

This piece won the acquisition prize in the "SalΓ£o de Pinheiros" in 2006

Thank you! In a piece with lot's of details like the hairs you mention, the most difficult to me was the shining in the right side (his left).

Hi alegreghi,

I love the drama in this image. You handled the contrasts very well. This will be a good reminder for me to keep the mood strong in my own work.

Hi... thank you for the nice words...
I try to think about the mood before and have it in mind during the execution to achieve what i had in mind, but it's easy to lose the path.

At first, i'd assumed this was an edited photograph, as it is so lifelike & well shaded...'twas a pleasant surprise to read your comment & realize that it was instead an excellent drawing.

In comparison to the original photo by sympa-inspir,it's even more impressive. The eyes are captivating(as you've drawn them esp),& the blue tones on the right side of the face add an interesting glow... Quite honestly i haven't any advice to offer on the negative side.

Congrats on the feature & numerous 's, well deserved.

Thank you very much for your words!
There are lots of people who think it is a photograph. Maybe i must insert a "(charcoal)" in the title.
I had a great reference, it helps to do a good job.
Thank you again for your visit and this comment!

You're immensely welcome. Although it may lead others to surpass the work, assuming it's a photo, those who do click on it will be pleasantly surprised and able to appreciate its grandeur.

Perhaps it should remain a gift to those unwilling to be ignoran, then again, adding 'charcoal' may be a good idea

I had this "problem" before in others pieces. People don't realise the pieces are a drawing and not even click on it. But i think you are right, i'll let like a surprise to the one that click.

Sorry for being kind of late on this, but anyways.
I think if the massive amount of favourites are any indication, this is a very very well done piece. The lighting, shading, composition are all executed very well. One thing I kind of find strange is that his left eye, probably due to the stark black shading around it, looks a lot more sunken in, while the right eye comparably juts out a lot more.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

alegreghi In reply to dearlithium [2007-04-13 13:36:53 +0000 UTC]

Don't worry about you being late. If everybody who's late does a comment like yours .....
That's a comment, and you are just 16...
Well, Thank you for the compliments, and about that eye, i never pay atention to what you said because the original have some lights that puts the eye in the right place. There's a big dark mass of shadow because of the light angle, but you are right because this photograph lost some of the lights, and the eye looks "floating" in the dark. If you can, take a look at the full view and you can see some lights still there. The original have much more light in that area. Not enouht to bright (couse there are no direct light), but enought to see the place where the eye is in.
If i don't do myself clear ask what you don't understand and i'll try to explain myself, ok?

Thank you!

dearlithium In reply to alegreghi [2007-04-19 22:00:14 +0000 UTC]

I can't look at the original shot, because you know how parents are with their..internet filters and what not. Actually, if I look at it in full view, it does look less distorted. Perhaps it's just asymmetry in the face, because now that I look at it, I realize that what I see is because the eyes are not equidistant from the nose. Huh.
But anyways, charcoal clearly loves you more than me.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

alegreghi In reply to dearlithium [2007-04-20 20:45:14 +0000 UTC]

The asymmetry you mention doesn't occur, for sure. The left side of your brain is foolishing you because of the dark shadow. But i can assure to you it's not wrong.
