Description Now surely *someone* must know who this is!

Dr Who #3, and the last one for a while, although Leela, Jon Pertwee (Dr3), Peri and possibly Romana are coming, if you have any idea who I am talking about (which I doubt)

So...this is Tom Baker, who played the 4th doctor, and is probably the best known of all the people who played the doctor....

I am quite pleased with this one, personally. The hair nearly killed me, as the photo wasn't really much use, and the top of his head was chopped off. I do have a habit of drawing from inadequate photographs!

Hope you like it! Please comment!

Love it!! Tom Baker was the best Dr Who!!! Sadly so few people even know who he is at this point since David Tennant is the new Dr Who.

Thank you! I think Tom Baker is definitely getting more well-known now that the series is popular again. He's not actually my favourite Doctor (but neither is David Tennant) but I've always loved the series.

Happily, the classic series has got more popular since the new series came out (I think this picture was done before Dr Who became cool again, but I'm not entirely reliable with dates! ). Thanks for the ! I'm glad you like it!

BTW, is a new season of Dr. Who starting now?

There's a new season of the new series starting in 2010, I think, with a few specials next year.
btw, what happened to that wip of Rachel Hurd-Wood? And thanks for the on "Himba Tribeswoman'

I honestly don't know what happened... I posted it up but it didn't show! Weird... But then again, my computer HAS been acting weirdly all this week.
2010, new Dr. Who? I've got to watch that!
And no problem! BTW, I found time to get charcoal pencils... Now I will experiment with them... It's a pity I only got 4 types: light, medium, dark, and Chinese White 72B.
I'll try reposting that Rachel Hurd-Wood.... If I can find it, that is! I think I lost my sketchbook somewhere around the house... Darn.

There's been a new Dr Who since 2005, but apparently we're getting Dr 11 in 2010. Don't ask me who, though, as I haven't a notion...
Me and charcoal don't get on. Good luck with it!
Let me know when you do post it, and I'll come critique for you.

RoseDaughter In reply to Alene [2008-11-13 04:05:40 +0000 UTC]

Well, I don't get along well with charcoal either, but when my friend suggested that I get higher contrast, she bugged me to get charcoal pencils... It's going OK, charcoal and me, but there's no finite control. I hate that about charcoal.
I completely lost my old sketchbook! I left it on the subway!
Well, on the other hand, I can get a new one!
I wonder who's Dr. 11? I love the expression on David Tennant. PIty. He just looks so hilarious and quirky, that man.

Alene In reply to RoseDaughter [2008-11-13 06:46:58 +0000 UTC]

I think charcoal is too messy for me. I like to keep my fingers clean (although working with graphite, I still get grey all over my fingers!). I don't much like the scratchy feel of it, either, so I've never really done much work with it (so don't ask me for advice with charcoal, 'cause I'll be at a loss! )
Horror! My sketchbooks are pretty much permanently attached to me, so I don't accidently leave one somewhere.
David Tennant is really hard to draw. But I'll get there one day!

RoseDaughter In reply to Alene [2008-11-14 05:54:11 +0000 UTC]

Things I don't like about charcoal:
-the texture is very undefined
-very messy--once I worked with charcoal and my blue jeans turned grey
-there's no finite control
-smudges too easily
-scratchy feel on paper
So basically, I think I'll stick to pencil. And I tried drawing Bourne again with charcoal--didn't turn out so well! I'll stick to my pencil version. *sigh* if I have time I'll try and re-draw Rachel Hurd-Wood. But right now I need to get a new sketchbook and now I'm working on a picture of Hayley Williams (sketch). Oh, did I mention I posted a picture of Jean-Baptiste Maunier? You're welcome to check it out. Let me know when you post up new deviations!

That's about my feelings, too. I've taken a look at your new drawing.
Not sure when I'll get a new portrait up. I still need time! I have a few partially finished, though, and I'll try and get some time to work on them. I finished my uni work on Monday, and had planned to relax a bit, but since then I've made and written in 70-odd Christmas cards and taken on two commissions, made two sympathy cards.... and I need to majorly overhaul my illustration portfolio, and work out how to build my website at some point, too. Arrg!

Blecch... We're all busy. I'm still trying to finish a piece of writing, plus I have some family & social obligations. I stayed up until 12:00 last night--really not too bad for me--but woke up at 5:00. And I could fall asleep now. I don't think I have energy to do much...
And thanks for the advice... Jean-Baptiste Maunier DOES look a bit washed out. That was the first thing I noticed when I completed it; it was just that I have a humungous 6-part thingydo to work on and that took 2 weeks. I don't think I've even gotten to bed before 12:00 over the past 2 weeks!

Alene In reply to RoseDaughter [2008-11-15 07:05:51 +0000 UTC]

No, but the air feels thunderstormy. It's quite cool for November, actually, quite unnaturally so...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RoseDaughter In reply to Alene [2008-11-15 07:13:11 +0000 UTC]

Thunderstormy? It's almost never thunderstormy where I live! But the winters are pretty cold. I vaguely remember freezing in school while I was a kid and my fingers freezing stiff so that I couldn't write.
Well, Rachel Hurd-Wood turned out looking HORRIBLE. I think I must have bad luck with that picture. I'm just re-touching my Romola Garai portrait right now.

Alene In reply to RoseDaughter [2008-11-15 14:50:46 +0000 UTC]

I don't much mind thunderstorms (providing I don't have to be out in one ) but I hate the way the air gets before it rains, because it always gives me a headache.
I don't think you'd find our winters cold (I do though! ) but our summers can get pretty hot. It's odd to be in mid-November, and still be wearing long sleeves most of the time....
I have bad luck with pictures sometimes, too. It's always so annoying!

RoseDaughter In reply to Alene [2008-11-15 18:00:34 +0000 UTC]

For me, I always hate it when the sun is shining weakly through this expanse of white clouds in the sky (You know, where the whole sky is white)--I alway feel slightly nauseous. It's just very annoying.
The coldest winter here, it wasn't snowing (where I live, we're too trapped in a valley for it to snow) but I was wearing my wool coat and I was freezing with a sweater underneath, a shirt, and silk underwear underneath all of that! It was so cold, it was difficult to move.
I think I'm having bad luck with the Hayley Williams picture too... I think I'll take a break from drawing for a little while...burnout.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alene In reply to RoseDaughter [2008-11-16 04:03:55 +0000 UTC]

I always wear a ridiculous number of clothing layers, and I still get cold (and I bet it's no where near as cold as it gets for you!)
Maybe you should try drawing something other than a portrait- radically different in style. That often helps me with burnout. Or, of course, a break is good.
Thanks for the on "The Umbrella" I'm glad you liked it!

I drew Aragorn from LOTR. Meh. It turned out OK, but I screwed up the eyes and the lips are impossible...Ah, well. At least he looks like he has high cheekbones. Gah!
I'll just say that the so-called Aragorn is supposed to be the way I envisioned God to look like. LOL.
And no problem on 'The Umbrella'! It reminds me of... Well, something evanescent.

Alene In reply to TheGreenMoon [2008-10-13 18:09:04 +0000 UTC]

Thankyou! This is looking rather old and tired to me now though - eventually I want to do another one, plus the rest of the doctors, and hopefully that will be better!
The shading on your picture, however, is not at all bad. You probably spent less time on it than I did, too!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheGreenMoon In reply to Alene [2008-10-14 21:35:08 +0000 UTC]

ay happens to me with my pictures too lol. You start not liking them and don't really like looking at them at all
yes but that's my problem! I don't spend enough time on them!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alene In reply to TheGreenMoon [2008-10-15 13:21:07 +0000 UTC]

That's true. This one has held up pretty well, though, considering it's 4 years old, and I've improved such a lot in skill and technique since then.
And yes, patience may be a virtue, but it's hard to keep it steady when you've finished the more interesting parts of a drawing. I still have to force myself not to rush the drawing of things I'm less interested in.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheGreenMoon In reply to Alene [2008-10-15 22:21:43 +0000 UTC]

oh good for you!
I totally agree, it is hard not to rush that...but I have to say I don't really find any parts boring to draw on the Doctor! xD except the shoes. I cannot draw shoes for my life.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alene In reply to TheGreenMoon [2008-10-16 09:00:20 +0000 UTC]

I find repetitive things, like lace, or knitting, horrible to draw. I want to rush and get them over and done with - but if I do, they don't look any good. So I have to keep myself drawing slowly and steadily!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheGreenMoon In reply to Alene [2008-10-17 21:11:04 +0000 UTC]

*sigh* and the doctor just HAS to have a 20 foot knitted scarf XD
you're right--especially when the face is beautiously drawn and then the clothes are horrible, it just kills the product's overall excellence XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alene In reply to TheGreenMoon [2008-10-18 00:13:17 +0000 UTC]

True. Sometimes you can get away with just suggesting clothing, it depends on the drawing style, but generally well-drawn clothes, backgrounds etc just add to the overall drawing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheGreenMoon In reply to Alene [2008-10-25 20:33:11 +0000 UTC]

I just drew a picture of Sarah Jane and the Doctor and I really tried to make it look finished, and I think it does look a million times better than I probably would have left it by! You have given me good advice, I thank ye for it
