"For heaven's sake, when will this heat be over?" you sighed for the thousandth time while standing on deck waving a fan to get some air.
"When will you stop complaining for the millionth time?... and it's just morning!".
"Stop making it a fuss (y/n) - yoi " Ace and Marco told you while laying down to sunbath.
"Oh well... you make it easy... You are the only ones who can stand this hot weather" you grumbled "stupid bird and stupid fireball".
"We heard you!" they yelled only to make you turn your back while Thatch came to bring some icecreams.
"Guys stop it now, please... and you, y/n, why don't you stay with the top of your bikini?" he spoke naturally and in a peaceful way. You blushed and your eyes looked at the opposite way while holding down your short-sleeved t-shirt. You were aware well aware of yourself: your body wasn't that of a model but neither you were fat.. you just were a bit chubby but that little more flesh, particularly on your belly and your thighs, made you envious of other skinny girls and more self-conscious. But more important and what was on your mind was the concern about your crewmates; you were afraid they would laugh at you if they saw you wearing something that could show your body.
So you tried to keep on wearing the t-shirt and endure the hot sun... when all of a sudden Haruta shouted he spotted land and a city we could take a break.
Once got to the port small groups formed and you just stand on the street like a pole waiting for someone to invite you when Thatch called you back taking your hand and walking towards the city centre with Ace, Marco and Izo: the "three idiots" gang ahead and you and Izo behind them. You were blushing madly being next to him because of obvious matters that is love. Oh yes! It was almost three weeks you realized you were in love with that geisha-like man and around him you were a shy stuttering mess.
You went around in different shops looking in awe at every fancy dress and bikinis that show lots of skin. You just wanted to look but... once they literally dragged in a underwear shop and they all girls' eyes on them and you could hear compliments for your friends. All the female costumers were looking at your handsome crewmates and those "stupids", more like Ace only, were paying attention to those.
Looking at those girls you sighed. "Oh I wish I could be like them... maybe Izo would notice me more".
"(y/n) - yoi... If you want something to buy, do it now" Marco told you nonchalantly yet smiling at you.
You just looked at those bikinis and dresses you would like to wear but observing for a while your body.
"If only I were a bit skinnier" you mumbled at yourself.
"Oh I don't need anything.. I just wanted to look. Let's go away". You looked at your friends and then headed out.
You went further inside the city taking the opportunity to help Thatch with the shopping. You spent a good hour wandering around the stands and having sore feet for walking almost all afternoon you decided to stop by a bar. Once you found it you alone sat at a free table while the other went inside to order some drinks.
"Ehi! Look at her! Ahahah alone at the table... well seems reasonable.".
"You thought those hotties would sit wih her? she's not gorgeous".
"If I were her, I wouldn't have the courage to hang out with such handsome guys.".
"Who does that 'fatty' thinks she is?".
"Only because she's with them, she shouldn't think she's pretty".
You could have sat down not so far away but you could hear that gossip of some girls there like they were only an inch from you... and those mockeries made you sick.
"Oi y/n.. we bought you something to drink and an icecream" Ace almost shouted and listening to weak scornful laughs you took your leave and feeling embarrassed and duped you headed back to the port... leaving your friends dumbfounded.
Once you went on deck you avoided everyone's sight even that of pops who was concerned. You went to your room, looked at the mirror and left some tears... as those dialogues of those girls of the bar made you even more self-conscious and you wanted to dig a hole for yourself to hid.
You remained composed and quiet until dinner and even after.. and that made everyone worried; as the only "sister" and "daughter" of the crew they were protective and always concerned about you and in that moment seeing you in that untroubled state they were more concerned than before. It was unusual for you being that peaceful especially at meal hours because you always chatted with everyone laughing and smiling... but more important you always eat big portions as that of two men and that evening you touched almost nothing.
In this way Whitebeard placed his sake glass and after hushing everyone he asked.
"Tell me daughter, there is something wrong?".
You hadn't the courage to look at him for the tears that were forming in your eyes and looking at the table you whispered.
"Oh.. it's nothing, pops". You smiled a little at his concern and in front of your eyes you found your favourites strawberries soaked in chocolate that Thatch made only for you. The cook with his cute smile offered the dessert to you only to see you rejecting it in a gentle way.
"What's going on, y/n? It's not for you rejecting your favourite dessert".
"I'm not that hungry Thatch. Thanks anyway but I'm full". You said goodnight to everyone and went to the room you shared with Izo. You took a bath and right on the point of adjusting your nightdress ready for bed and looking sadly at your reflection on the mirror Izo opened the door. He observed you leaning silently on the jamb. You blushed heavily and in a matter of seconds you covered your belly; he smoked his pipe and gazing at you in a gentle way he approached.
"So... this is why you were so calm all this afternoon". A faint smile was on his face.
"Please.. don't look at me like this... I'm embarrassed" you whispered.
"Why? Why can't I look at you?". His voice was so caring and you could hear a tone of concern.
"I-it's nothing Izo... I'm just tired... please leave me.". You didn't even have time to turn to your bed that he grabbed your arm and hugged you.
"Please... tell me. Everyone is worried about you, especially me.".
You felt tears forming in your eyes and in his warm arms you let everything out.
"It's that... I don't feel beautiful at all. Today in the city every girl we met and you looked at were beautiful and thin... and those dresses too... I'm chubby. A-and at the bar every girl were gossiping about me being 'fatty' and being one who doesn't deserve to be around handsome boys. That made me sad.. I felt like as if I was being laughed at.".
He caressed you and soothed you.
"Being fatty and being chubby is a complete different story.. yes you're chubby but you're one of the few prettiest girl I've ever met, believe me. Those girls could have been even models but for how badly they treated you they aren't worthy at all. There's only a girl I like and care about and that's you. Go to hell the appearance! I give more value at the personality; I search for the inner beauty of a woman. For this you are wonderful in my eyes because I fell in love for uniqueness. Be always yourself and don't care about those words of those stupid girls".
He then cupped your cheeks and shared your first kiss... you felt his soft lips like silk on yours and it was amazing.. and at once you felt loved by someone.
