Appearance
★ [ Breed ]: Norwegian Forest Cat x Turkish Angora x Nebelung x Oriental Longhair
★ [ Description ]:
A ghost of a cat, Marrow's body is veiled in a coat consisting of smoky grays. Xir medium gray fur is shadowed by a darker cape that extends from his shoulders down to the ribbons of fur that lace from his back legs and his tail, and the same color can be seen on xir ears and the longer fur that hangs over his face. Lighter grays and whites paint almost a heart shape on his face that trails along Marrow's chest and underbelly, and almost peculiarly each of his four paws are dipped in the same bright colors. Overall, Marrow's pelt is fairly symmetrical; but although some may find his pelt to be rather dull, it's rare that a tribe cat can deny the striking appearance of xir features. Small ears that are almost cutely rounded are offset by the keen slant of the deputy's unique eyes and the graceful angles of his face, and along Marrow's neck is a plume of fur that expresses itself in a regal, feathery mane. And though he's not the most imposing or tall of felines, he carries himself in a manner that is both elegant and calculating, as if he's sure of every step. It's rare to see Marrow presenting himself in a manner that is anything but; the Gold's outward exterior can only be described as "casual, but with a purpose."
★ [ Height ]: Average; he has a very straight and prim posture, however.
★ [ Weight ]: Wide-set, but overall very sleek. Her hidden muscle makes her more sturdy than she seems.
★ [ Eye ]: Xe has sectoral heterochromia of both a charming pink and a spicy green; gives xir a striking gaze
★ [ Fur ; Length ]: Long along his head and underside, it hangs in a manner that is very wraith-like. He has feathery neck fur that appears as a plumy mane.
★ [ Other]: 'X' shaped scar on xir chest.

Personal
★ [ Personality ]:
“Everything is going to be okay. I'm here, remember?”
+ [ gentle ]: mild in temperament or behavior; kind or tender.
Despite the almost careless manner in which Marrow holds himself, he deeply cares about the well-being of cats around him. Though at this point in time he knows hardly any tribe cats, xe realizes that the Light Spirit chose xir out of a wide array of cats (who xe knows could probably lead the tribe one hundred times more confidently) and Marrow tries his absolute hardest to recognize each member of Light Tribe's potential in an effort to reach his own. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, the tom does his best to show sympathy and kindness toward the cats he's been chosen to lead, and he intends to work extra-hard to prove his worth as their deputy.
“What's your motive?”
- [ cynical ]: believing that people are motivated by self-interest; distrustful of human sincerity or integrity.
Time and sour experiences has made Marrow more than a little wary of others, and because of this it's considerably difficult to win xir trust. To him, cats rarely perform any act of kindness without either wanting something in return or trying to benefit through personal gain. This makes him both reluctant to accept any help and suspicious of cats around him, which can at times be quite frustrating to his warm-hearted tribe-mates. While in Nandryx he's found that there are plenty of examples of cats being helpful and kind toward one another for the sake of being nice and helpful, the tom still hasn't grown accustomed to the fact that this is so. However, despite how annoying or exasperating it can be, his dubiousness allows him to easily pinpoint trouble and see through someone's lies-- which can be handy in times of need.
“Last I heard, you were quite the esteemed adventurer yourself.”
+ [ captivating ]: capable of attracting and holding interest; charming.
Marrow knows how to play a crowd. Be it through compliments or by giving polite commentary, he knows how to get cats to like him when he needs them to. It's not that he's not much of a smooth-talker; Marrow just has an innate ability to draw others to him with his hardworking and down-to-earth nature. His ability to relate and sympathize with others makes him somewhat of a good diplomat, and Marrow's cool disposition has gotten xir out of plenty of dicey situations in xir life before coming to the tribes. Rarely does Marrow intentionally try to assuage others, however, and xe especially avoids deceiving and lying to get his way. In all honesty, he simply enjoys seeing other cats happy.
“Oh, uh...it was supposed to be a joke, actually. Ha...ha?”
- [ enigmatic ]: difficult to interpret or understand; mysterious.
Unfortunately for xir, Marrow's charm doesn't extend much in the way he carries himself. While his aloofness can be refreshing when times are hectic, to some it can be more than a little confusing. Be it jokes or when making teasing remarks, Marrow often speaks in a very flat, simple, and "deadpan" tone, and his cool expressions and lack of an ability to emote strongly often saps any of the well-meant humor and sincerity out of his words. Because of this, xe sometimes finds it difficult to navigate social situations, and this awkwardness leads him to fumble more than a few times when xe is trying to make conversation.
“No...this is something different. It has to be.”
+ [ erudite ]: having or showing great knowledge or learning.
Marrow is very much a perceptive cat; not only are deceptive sleights and thinly veiled lies rarely are able to trick the tom, but he has also become very accustomed to the way in which the world is always growing and changing. Through experience, xe has learned to never grow complacent with what life has to offer; Marrow fervently seeks out new experiences and adventures frequently as he travels from place to place. Though xe rarely boasts xir intelligence, this observant nature toward his surroundings has made him both adaptive and well-learned about a wide variety of topics. It's rare to be able to surprise Marrow with something new, as he either readily accepts the new knowledge, or he has already discovered it. Due to his rather sheltered upbringing, the deputy has spent a long time hungrily absorbing new information like a plant that's lived its life in the shadows, and to his pleasant surprise Nandryx is full with an abundant variety of its own complexities and enlightenment.
"Just because you think this is the right decision to make doesn't mean it is!"
- [ hot-headed ]: having an impetuous or quick-tempered nature.
More times than not xe tries to be agreeable and polite to those around xir, but there are times when xir temper gets the best of xir. Marrow spares no time in correcting others. Nor is he slow in tossing in his opinion on things, either; despite the fact that he prefers to remain cool and calm during an argument or disagreement, he also can talk someone's ears off when he feels like its appropriate to let them know that they're wrong. And, unfortunately, Marrow thinks that most cats are wrong. While xir tendency to snap and chew out others can make xir seem abrasive or even moody at times, Marrow tries his best to keep a level head when dealing with those he finds less than pleasant. Just try to not be the cat that pushes his buttons a little too far!
★ [ Extras ]:
note: Marrow often changes pronouns from day to day, and though he is rarely annoyed by cats using the incorrect set for a particular day, he's quick to correct those who do. He/him and Xe/xir are used more commonly than she/her pronouns!
Marrow also prefers not to be touched without permission! Doing so causes him to get particularly uncomfortable and uneasy, but normally he lets you if you ask

Background
★ [ History ]:
pre-history
[ I. Spark and Ember ]
After joining a group of vicious feral cats who lived lawlessly in a rag-tag cluster, it was in the dead of winter that Ivy soon succumbed to a sickness that left her weak and feeble. Though successfully giving birth to the two of four kits she'd been carrying, the strain of the act weakened her further until eventually she was unable to move very far nor often-- and though the kits' father tried his best to feed and care for her, she never improved. Both she and the tom were sure that neither of the two surviving kits would survive, but to their astonishment both of the little kits, a tiny gray kitten like his father and a soft tabby like his mother, were able to survive the remainder of the cold winter. Inspired by their strength, Ivy finally agreed to name her kits "Hemlock," after her, and "Marrow" in hopes that the smaller kit would survive the harsh life she'd accidentally subjected him to. Never recovering, after a few short moons Ivy inevitably passed.
After Ivy's death, their father ceased to visit either of his sons, moving on to rise in the ranks in the violent band. At first, the kits were confused and dismayed-- did he not care about them anymore? Did they do something wrong? But after a while, his absence became normal. The two brothers had each other, and that's what mattered in the end. For most of their younger moons they were looked after by a cat named Saori, though the she-cat made it clear to both kits that they would only be her burden to bear until they could fend for themselves. And as they reached their first year, Saori made well on her promise and ousted the adolescents to find their own place in the colony.
Together, Hemlock and Marrow were able to fend for themselves, but as weeks passed it was clear that the strain of their lifestyle was beginning to take a toll on the littler Marrow. It wasn't necessarily his fault, Hemlock knew-- he was smaller, and he'd always been more shy and afraid of others. So Hemlock took it upon himself to protect his brother, primarily hunting for them and fending off any cat who thought they could pick on the two. It was a hard life, but they made the best of it, even as Hemlock was beginning to feel the pressure that was forced upon him. Despite the bitterness that was beginning to grow inside him, Marrow was all he had left. Until he wasn't.
[ II. Iron and Thorns ]
Unbeknownst to Hemlock, as time passed Marrow had begun to-- much like his mother before him --yearn for something better than the life they had been leading. Places where you didn't have to fight for every scrap of food, where bloodshed and malice wasn't a part of one's daily routine. Places where he could grow up to be a cat worth being proud of. And things had only gotten worse as their father became the unofficial leader of the colony; it was as if while every other cat impressed their high expectations and resentment on Marrow and Hemlock because of who their father was, their father had seemingly forgotten that he even had kits. It was practically unbearable, and from the stories Ivy had told her kits about her old home Marrow knew that there were brighter places just beyond the horizon. Unfortunately, every time he suggested leaving, Hemlock grew agitated and angry, accusing Marrow of not appreciating all that he had done for them. It was clear to him that Hemlock didn't want to leave, and as time passed their conflicts of interest served to put distance between the two brothers. Until, finally, Marrow decided to leave.
But it wouldn't be that easy. Angry and betrayed that Marrow would just abandon him after all they'd been through, Hemlock convinced a few cats to come with him to track Marrow down. They found him and managed to drag him back home, and though no cat admitted it, Hemlock included, Marrow knew that his every move was being watched. And after his attempted escape, things only got worse. Marrow was no longer protected by his brother, and because of it he was left vulnerable to any cat waiting to prey upon and antagonize him for his softer nature. Forced to fend for himself, the tom grew jaded and paranoid, mistrustful of not only the cats around him, but of his brother as well.
He knew he had to leave, now. Hemlock barely spoke to him, and he had become a cat that Marrow no longer recognized, having grown spiteful and violent towards others around him. But this time, he knew that he had to be smarter, more observant. Marrow waited until most cats were asleep before sneaking out of camp...only to run into Hemlock himself. His brother had been watching him, waiting for his next escape attempt, and as soon as Marrow snuck out of camp Hemlock was right behind him. Rather than fighting him or forcing him to return home, however, Hemlock instead pleaded for him to stay. But he soon realized that his brother was determined to leave, and just as he finally began to relent the two were ambushed by a night patrol. In a flash, Hemlock quickly jumped to Marrow's defense-- "Just like old times, right, Marrow?" -- and aided in his escape. As Marrow pelted away into the shadows, the last thing he heard was his brother's strangled cry.
[ III. Lone Wolf ]
Though he intended to escape toward the valley his mother had spoken of, Marrow quickly became lost. Eventually, he stopped trying to go to any particular place, content to travel wherever his paws took him. At night, nightmares of his old home and of his brother's death were fresh in his mind, but in the daytime Marrow reveled in his newfound freedom.
After almost a year of roaming, he came across a group of cats sheltering in a place just north of a desert-like territory who spoke of Nandryx and its tribes. Intrigued, and pulled forward by something he couldn't yet explain, Marrow said his goodbyes and traveled south to learn more, and maybe start a new life amongst the magical beings. After a bit of questioning, he found the totems, and after a bit of embarrassing antics Marrow received the completely normal and standard Gold tattoo...of a deputy. At this point, he's just trying to do his best to prove that he's worth the faith that the Light Spirit has, for some reason, placed in him.
