Description This view was the goal to shoot on the evening up on the mountain. I'd imagined shooting the view with a sunstar and I executed that shot and was happy with it ([link] ) but for me the 10 minutes or so after sunset provided the most atmosphere. I also shot this scene in portrait and as a massive panoramic. One of the great benefits of having a really strong focal point and a dramatic backdrop is it gives you a huge amount of flexibility.

Wow. Is that looking towards Colwyn Bay or Abersoch?

In that case it's Colwyn Bay.

Alex37 In reply to CarlPearce [2011-03-30 16:33:17 +0000 UTC]

Okay it's Snowdon on the left, Mynydd Mawr on the right and Gyrn Ddu with Caernarfon Bay in the distance You're only 180 degrees out

Best. No doubt about it. I would have shot another frame cropped below the clouds for a completely different atmos but I guess you could crop if you wanted that.

Apart from the Castell y Gwynt shot this is my favourite too. I tried the crop but didnt like it. Try it and I think you might find the shot becomes plain but that's just my opinion

JakeSpain In reply to Alex37 [2011-02-05 10:48:31 +0000 UTC]

Plain(er) yes, simpler, easier to grasp, more direct, to the point. I like it but I love it this way too.

mmm I don't think that's the reality actually, I think if you cut the sky out the image loses a lot of context

This is my favourite of the bunch, I think it's awesome. Despite not having any direct light, this is really really strong. The compression of the rocks at the front and the layered hills at the back is brilliant. Interesting that this is the one that people here on DA have commented on less.

Thanks Andy, it's my second favourite. People on DA like bright colours and sunstars, its a tried and tested formula!

Thanks, I cant imagine there being a more dratic ridge, but I have seen so little of Snowdonia. I think the next trip I am going to try to summit Snowdon for sunrise

Crib Goch, on the Snowdon Horseshoe, is quite a ridge. Have fun

ha yeah, so I have heard. Won't be doing that one in the winter tbh! I need to order some spikes for my next outing

Earth-Hart In reply to Alex37 [2011-01-31 22:25:43 +0000 UTC]

You need good snow & ice work under your belt to do it in winter that's for sure
I lived in Nant Peris, at the Vaynol Arms. I was the Chef there for 2yrs., before I got itchy feet. Climbed Masters Wall, on Crib Goch, in late January. Thankfully, I didn't have to lead

Alex37 In reply to Earth-Hart [2011-01-31 22:30:10 +0000 UTC]

I've got to be honest, if I wasnt going for photographs I would have probably turned back just walking up Devils kitchen. There was some really glassy ice in areas and although the risk was small the consequences were big! I certainly took my time on those sections!

Personally I think the balance is right as it is, but thanks for the suggestion

I prefer this version rather than the one with the sunflare (although nothing wrong with that one) especially the background aerial perspective.

Alex37 In reply to Wungu [2011-01-31 18:48:30 +0000 UTC]

I also prefer it, it's a bit more subtle
