Alex37 In reply to ??? [2009-06-26 19:03:45 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for your critique. I think the points you make are fair and the marking is generous!

I actually shot from this slightly more elevated position so that the sycamore leaves would break up the branch strtching across the top of the image. In retrospect this may have been a mistake.

Thanks again.

you're welcome

Perhaps if you return there one day you can try another angle. I'd love to see the outcome. Do you live far from that place?

Amazing... Especially for the 30 seconds exposure.

Nicely composed, with stunning, vivid colours from the fern. Maybe a little busy as others have said, but that's being a little picky, it doesn't ruin the image for me anyway.

Very cool! I guess the air was extremely still to have the ferns so sharp over a 30s exposure.

yeah, in marked contrast to know when it is sunny but very windy indeed.

It just isn't enough coming from you I'm afraid.
the comp is nearly there but rendered pointless by the "scene" which is mediocre to say the least.
sharp - yes
dof - great
colours - accurate

Technically very good (not sure about the 30sec was it the middle of the night?)but technical brilliance is just not enough.

I think a little bit of lighting would have helped especially some dappling.
Good attempt but for me more of a practice shot.

Alex37 In reply to JakeSpain [2009-06-24 06:45:40 +0000 UTC]

It was near sunset.
I'm not personally a fan of sunlight on these scenes, maybe if it was very soft indeed, but that kind of light is hard to come by, anything else and the highlights blow, such is the darkness of this area.

Anyway whilst I agree with the criticisms and I think they are fair enough, I find it a bit unnecessary to say 'It just isn't enough coming from you I'm afraid'. I hope I am not carrying an unreasonable burden of expectation on my shoulders. If, for ever shot I take that is unsucessful, I was given such a comment I would find that quite a downer, like I am not acheiving what I should be. Its more of an absolute if you see what I am saying.

So thank you for the critique Jake, I welcome it, but dont give me all this 'isn't enough coming from you' nonsense!

JakeSpain In reply to Alex37 [2009-06-24 16:31:24 +0000 UTC]

All I meant was that if I had taken it it would have got as far as lightroom and been left there! I do expect good things from you Alex and you should from yourself that's all. It was supposed to be blunt but not offensive.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alex37 In reply to JakeSpain [2009-06-24 16:43:24 +0000 UTC]

I do expect good things from myself, and I regularly achieve them

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JakeSpain In reply to Alex37 [2009-06-25 15:38:29 +0000 UTC]

Then is it really wrong for me to expect the same?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alex37 In reply to JakeSpain [2009-06-25 15:59:48 +0000 UTC]

well you are judging me from a different set of criteria.

I absolutely still need the critique, but I could do without the ' I expect better from you' because I think that comes with a preconception of what I should be acheiving and is far more subjective than critiques usually are, if you see what I mean?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JakeSpain In reply to Alex37 [2009-06-25 17:06:08 +0000 UTC]

"far more subjective than critiques usually are" Far more "personal" I would say.....And a little more honest? If one of your lectures made a similar comment about a piece of coursework would you feel the same way?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alex37 In reply to JakeSpain [2009-06-25 17:09:01 +0000 UTC]

no, because academic work is measured in absolutes, and is therefore not comparable

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JakeSpain In reply to Alex37 [2009-06-25 20:40:00 +0000 UTC]

Well you won't get too far with an attitude like that! You have hit on one of my main grievances with academia and one of the main reasons for me not getting very far with education.
There are very few absolutes in this world, it is a wash with grey areas and scientists are constantly updating the "facts"... What you refer to is orthodoxy and I believe that most aspects of life are paradoxical. Absolute fact requires nothing more that a learnt regurgitation of other peoples ideas.
If academia is absolute then we would have no pioneers no debate or any new ideas and no progress - a little like religion.....

QUESTION EVERYTHING!

But ok fair enough from now on I suppose I must have no expectations of you....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alex37 In reply to JakeSpain [2009-06-25 21:39:09 +0000 UTC]

okay let me rephrase. Academia is measured in absolutes. That is to say you are scored against a set of fixed criteria. This isnt the case for art.
You can have expectations, its pretty unavoidable just lay them on me!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JakeSpain In reply to Alex37 [2009-06-26 13:08:17 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I have been wondering all day how you would take that one....pretty well it seems....it's the drugs you know.....
I think there is a set of criteria for art hence you can be marked against the rules when you study the subject but I don't claim to know them.

There's something about ferns....they're so tempting to photograph but so bloody hard to do well....I spent about an hour the other weekend trying to get ferns to work...I wasn't happy though, might put one of the shots in scraps.

I like the bottom part of this, and the water is nice, but as James said, the branch at the top seems an element too many

I'm not usually, quite the opposite in fact, I am very stubborn. But if I examine the image I can see lots of reasons why it doesnt work and very few reasons why it does.

SoraMidori [2009-06-23 04:13:06 +0000 UTC]

I love all the green, and the water definitely shines through. The main distraction seems to be the green branch/stick in the middle of the image. It separates the flow of the water.

Other than that, I'm in love with those beautiful ferns.

JamesHackland [2009-06-22 23:43:28 +0000 UTC]

Well honestly this shot doesn't do much for me at all, I am not saying it is bad it just doesn't work for me. I just find it very busy and lacking a focal point. I think I see what you were trying to do which is create a bit of a frame around the water with the ferns and the maple branch but there are just too many elements and it gets confusing. Forests are one of the most difficult places to shoot, they are very busy and often have too many ugly dead elements that detract from a composition. I think you have done a pretty good job of simplifying the scene but it just wasn't enough.

Think I might have to be w/ James here but definitely understand your sentiment of trying to create when not in the right mental space. Good for the try and crazy no wind! :-P
