Hi, I'm from ProjectComment
This illustration shows a very funny and entertaining idea with the monster behind of that person. The poses and expressions of the characters also fit perfectly
What I like the most is the level of detail in general, but above all in the characters because they look very realistic.
Other aspects that are great are the composition and brushstrokes because the result is quite natural and pleasant. Good idea blurring the far elements
The muted colors that you have used are a great success for the scene you are representing. I see that the green-blue-purple predominates and they combine very well between them, giving a very credible result.
What I don't like too much is the amount of brightness in the monster and its slime. I think you have put too many reflections of light and the texture it doesn't help to know what it is composed of. Is it an organic or mechanical entity? I see a robot on the left side, or some kind of machine. However, it doesn't have as much shine and reflections, although it is probably made of metal. I personally would have made it backwards: less bright in the monster to look organic and more in the robot on the left to look metallic.
Speaking about the robot, as I can't see almost any part of the body, it's not so clear because you cut it outside the margin. Maybe an arm and half of the torso but I'm not sure. Besides, it looks as if it were located closer to the viewer than to the smaller character.... the perspective is a bit confusing.
As for the anatomy and proportions, I think the monster is quite credible. But the smaller character gives the impression that he has a very large head and chest, in addition to very thin legs. I would have inverted those parts. Everything else it's very well made.
Good luck and keep going !

Hiya thanks so much for the comment! It's really given me a lot of food for thought.
But... I kind of have to disagree with what you say about the highlights. I do agree that the robot might have done better with an extra highlight or two, but when working on it I decided to just highlight a few of the areas that weren't too exposed whilst the rest would be covered in rust and scratches (although I only ended up giving the weathering treatment to its arm pauldron, but that was more because of laziness hehe). But in the case of the alien I intended to have that amount of highlights, heck if I had more skill I'd probably would have given it even more, because I was trying to give it that natural slime shine that you see in fish, eels and salamanders (after all, this is a swamp dweller we're talking about here, so it's only natural for it to have a humid slimy exterior).
And as for the perspective with the robot, I also have to disagree with you here. Having it in the foreground, while partially in frame was also intentional. After all it's a perspective technique, where showing objects both in the background and foreground, in front and behind your subject creates that sense of depth needed to accurately show your characters in a 3D environment. The robot is actually a few meters away from the astronaut and very close to the viewer, if this were a picture the photographer would have taken the shot right next to the robot itself. And yes you are actually just seeing the robot's arm and a bit of its leg in frame. If you want a better idea of how it looks like I also have the full concept sheets here -> www.artstation.com/artwork/W2G…
And anatomy wise well... It's just a space suit dude haha. Sure the chest plate and helmet are way too large for the character's anatomy, but I was going for a retro-futuristic look, taking inspiration in similar designs as seen in Alien or Lost in Space. What can I say? I'm a sucker for the classic space-diving suit look. But I will agree that his legs are way too long (rather than thin). I think that part of it was that the character was drawn as such a relatively small detail in my original pencil sketch that I didn't notice how long his legs were until it was too late hehe.
Anyway thanks a bunch for the comment I really appreciate it!

Very nice! The detail of the monster's mouth is fantastic, and the large amount of (drool? Lol ) gives it a great characteristic. The reflection and rippling in the water is very well done. Don't be afraid to keep working with shadows to bring more of a depth to the image. Overall, great work! :}

Hiya thanks a bunch!
Although could you expand a bit on the shadows part? Do you mean cast hard shadows or soft ambient shadows? I mean I probably could have cast a better shadow from the creature's head onto its body. But did I miss other important shadows?

Hmm I see... Well yeah this helps! I do agree about maybe adding a harder shadow on his belly cast from it's head. But as for the rest you mentioned, it kind of makes me feel rather down, 'cause I actually added those hard shadows in the back of the body and the tail heck there's even a small gap of light that came through the spaces between. In my mind, I thought of the way that shadows are cast on a pale subject where shadows on the body are closer to a shade of blue or purple under a cool light. So in my mind any part of the skin in purple is actually in shadow.

Hi! I'm here from Project Comment, and I'd like to give you some feedback!
This is a really awesome photo. Totally humorous. You know, just your average guy taking a picture next to some ravenous monster. I love the design of the creature as well. Really creative and unique. Keep up the good work. This really is an awesome piece.

Hello and thanks!
Well no, actually it’s the first time I’ve heard of that cryptid. To make this guy I actually used a cobra as a base and mixed it with axolotl, man o’war and horse-shoe crab. With a dash of Giger inspiration to add a bit more menace.

Exactly! But like every scientist and John Hurt character, sci-fi scientists keep poking stuff they shouldn't be with a stick. Although... I wouldn't blame this guy in particular... The creature actually looks pretty docile and cute even at first glance... www.artstation.com/artwork/W2G…
With its mouth shut, it's just this cute worm squid haha
