Holy, crap IT IS DIGITAL! How the heck did you get that color pencil/ pastel chalk look???
lol.. looked at description LOL.... ok... better question: Why both digital and traditional? Doesn't that require a lot of back and forth with scanning or even the jet ink messing up the paper??
Ok, re-wording: What kinda work process is this???

I took different "body parts" from different pieces I painted traditionally, with acrylics and oils, and then "stitched" them together in Photoshop. I liked the unfinished look, so I left it as it is. Nothing I would do on a regular basis, just an experiment, but was fun.

Really awesome stuff, as always.
So the digital part is from the knees and below, or did you add more in the entire piece?

Actually, I took "body parts" from different paintings and stitched them together digitally, then added a bit of photoshop work, especially on the head and the background. I deliberately left the lower part unfinished...

Looking amazing, Alex. Since I'm also incorporating digital work into my own process, I have to ask, how you're doing it? Does it saves you time when compared to full traditional?

AlexHorley In reply to Antonio-Rocha [2014-10-20 07:57:05 +0000 UTC]
Thanks Antonio! It does save time,on occasion, but I still try to do as much as possible with real brushes. Then I "optimize" the paintings digitally and tweak things around. personally, I like a more painterly and "raw" rendering, but most times It's required to go in to details more than I would for myself, but that's when digital comes handy. I even tried 100% digital pieces, but they couldn't tell the difference, so I thought why bother? Photoshop is amazingly helpful and I like to play with it, like with this piece, but I feel I can keep more life and energy in my paintings if I do most of the work traditionally.Β

My pleasure, bro. I'm really far from being a photoshop wiz, but just basic tools are enough to tweak and play around your traditional works.

Thanks, Robert! Just playing around with Photoshop, I'll never give up traditional tools.
i just want to be able to use digital (when needed) on top of real paintings but still make it look "seamless"...

Totally agree. thanks, man! I try different approaches to keep my works "fresh" and also avoid to get bored by the same approach all the time.

I knew I recognized those nails! I have a DC plastic statue thing of a Worgen (and now a Gnoll) and I love how, even with the more exaggerated body dimensions characteristic of the game, it still holds up as a badass shapeshifter.
Keep up the good work Mr. Horley. C:
