Well, here comes the inevitable

I've actually tried to paint dinosaurs a few times before, but it never really went anywhere.
I think one thing that's so hard about working with prehistoric animals is... there are no photos of them. Duh. But really. The only thing available is artistic interpretations and I always feel like I'm just copying someone else's art. And I don't want to copy it too closely, but I also don't want to do some weird shit just to be different. It's a bit like writing cliches. You don't want to be too predictable, but, after all, cliche is a cliche for a reason, it's because they work.
Anyway, since anatomy of raptors is, presumably, pretty straightforwardly reconstructed (unlike someone else...), my creative freedom was mostly with feathers and coloration. I looked at some desert birds and, unsurprisingly, they have a lot of white, tan and brown colors. I liked markings of Cactus Wrens and Roadrunners, as well as cold greys and bright oranges of Kestrels. I also had to be careful as to not waste all my tricks on one design, in case I'll be drawing a similar animal in the future. And I'm kinda already doing that lol.
