Description Art has almost nothing to do with the story. Just felt like photomaniping and it fit well with this snippet.

"She's won her last four races, you know." Michelle leaned on the fence next to where Richard was intently watching Aris gallop around the pasture.
"Mm."
"Still think we're crazy for picking her up?"
"Some horses are more broken then others. If she was a fish I'd of tossed her back." Richard glanced over at Aris' handler. The woman's arm was tightly bandaged and she held herself gingerly. "She ran you down and then bit your arm over a day ago and you're just now getting philosophical about her?"
"She's an amazing racer."
Richard scoffed and looked back out into the pasture. "So? If she can't be handled, what's the point?"
Sighing, Michelle fiddled with the bandage. "Maybe if we knew what her story is, we could prevent" she made a vague hand gesture to encompass the havoc the rampaging mare had caused, "happening again."
"War."
"Hmm?" Michelle glanced at Richard, whose face was shadowed.
"My best guess is war. Message runner, maybe."
"No one uses horses in war any more."
"Not here, no, but she's been through a war. You've seen the scars." He glanced over for conformation and Michelle nodded. "I'd say two, maybe three years running messages. The scars are pretty standard shrapnel damage, along with close combat wounds. She's got enough psychological trauma for six horses."
Michelle said nothing, watching Aris crop grass peacefully, one ear swiveled towards them.
"She'll keep having episodes. Next time you may lose a limb." Richard pushed off the fence and stepped away.
"Can't you fix her? Like with the Vahsi."
Richard shrugged. "Won't do much good."
"What are we supposed to do, sell her? She's winning nine times out of ten."
The ex-mercenary shrugged and walked off, leaving the question hanging. Michelle glanced at Aris, who had lifted her head and was watching her back. She rubbed his arm again and left quickly.

Quick photomanip of Aris which came out better than expected. Left it quite large because it's intended to be a desktop wallpaper, if you're into that kind of thing. You may use it as such if you want c:

Richard and Michelle get philosophical about Aris' background and inclusion at DWR. Also hey, meet Michelle. She's in her late thirties, has been working at DWR for ages and has taken on Aris, convinced she can mellow the mare. Admittedly under her care Aris has become a more reliable racer, but off the track she's still having problems...
