Oh no. I tried that one a few times, but never felt comfortable with it. Probalby because I lack almost completely any practice with traditional media.
This is all photoshop "painterly" brushes and smudge tools. A lot collected here and there and a few personal ones. And at the end of the painting process Photoshop functions also helps by easily enhancing colors, adding vibrance and sharpness in key spots, etc.

That vertical design, especially on a big ship, is quite fascinating. Of course, there's no rule saying that spaceships should always be long tubes instead of some other shape.
