Description
Central Florida, 30,000 years ago. We are in the middle of the dry season and a semiaquatic hornless rhino refreshes itself in one of the last water bodies remaining in the landscape. Nearby a small herd of lamas graze while a family of monkeys leave the bush to calm their thirst, unaware of the tragedy that just happened a few metres away. In the foreground, a spotted puma has just captured a deer and it is about to feast on it, not far from a pair of hutias sitting by their burrow. Only a vulture has noticed the new kill and is hovering above, waiting for the moment to come down and eat the leftovers.

This is an alternative vision of Pleistocene North America (see also www.deviantart.com/alfecha/art… ) in which there was less biotic interchange with Eurasia and South America during the Pleistocene, and many Pliocene North American species survived to the end of the Pleistocene (for example, hornless rhinos). However, unlike in our timeline, new world monkeys and rodents (hutias) managed to reach Florida from Cuba, due to prolonged low sea levels making it easier to raft across the narrow sea.
