The Caledonian wolfox (Megalopex caledonicus) is a speculative canid that might evolve in future Great Britain. It descends from the red fox (Vulpes vulpes), which in the absence of wolves, bears and lynxes will likely evolve to occupy the top mammalian predator niche in its ecosystem, regulating deer overpopulation. This may be already happening, as very large foxes have been hunted recently in Scotland.
