Description I actually managed to find some in between snapshots I saved of this painting.

The process on this one very much lacked direction. I'm usually not one who uses photobrushes, but I had made some just the week before from some vacation photos and then when this painting came along I got the idea that I definitely had to try them. As you can see it's a terrible idea to try to make things go together that don't belong together and I ended up starting from scratch and fully painting the rocks by hand. You can also see that I kept trying to kind of fit waterfalls in there - it seemed like a nice thought but visually the straight lines didn't work with the overall flow I wanted for the image. Same goes for the floating bells. This is also the reason I got rid of the little bracelet - the rhythm of it just didn't fit the rest.
The color change in the clothes in the end is due to me misinterpreting the styleguide at first - Jeskai clothes were only colorful after the dragons went extinct and I hadn't actually noticed that.

In case you're curious, I post a bunch of studies and sketches on my blog algenpfleger.tumblr.com/ so check it out! You can also follow me on facebook www.facebook.com/algenpflegerd…

Ok bye *3*

Thanks for sharing your steps. This looks great and even if you left in the first rock style it still would look amazing.

Oh nice description.Β Β  Thank you for sharing.Β  I've never seen anyone use lines on the shirt like you do in the first two panels.Β  Is that how you keep track of contours in shades areas or is that from the concept of the fabric pattern?
Amazing lighting thanks for sharing this with me.

Wow. The intricacy of the decision making depicted in these few steps is mind boggling. I can't wait till I'm this experienced! Awesome work as always. I wish you could be my mentor!

The rocks look soo much better hand-painted *__* it was a good call to change it.Β

I think it's interesting how you completely changed the temperature of the painting in the last step :0 Was that something you considered doing for a while during the painting, or was it last minute experimentation?

hey man thanks *_* yes i thought so too, i wanted it to have some flow so flowing rocks fit a lot better than ... rocky ones

regarding the palette change in the end, i usually try to keep the card as a whole in mind in the end, i knew this illustration was going on a white card with a warm-ish frame - i feel it looks better if the colors go together that way. i usually do a mockup over a magic card and then play around with what works best for the entire card. obviously it's not as simple as "blue card blue colors" but keeping the context in mind is definitely worthwhile

Ooh that makes a lot of sense (doing a mockup of the card). The illustration itself isn't the entire finished product after all.Β
That's great advice, seeing as I work towards doing magic cards one day ;D
