In the morning before Eppy had to be up for school, Bollo was back but without Naboo asleep on the sofa as Vince fed the birds, getting the latest news. "Really? Pete Neon was at Woolworth's all night on the ledge building a nest? I knew something was happening with him." The bird then flew off.
Vince, with a smile on his face, spread the rest of the bird seed before he rested back in his lover's arms. Howard watched the birds eat.
"Last night was just...it was just incredible."
"Yeah it was," Vince smiled. He turned around and snuggled under Howard's chin. He felt better about his relationship with Howard now that he felt like he was a part of it again. Last night was something they never felt before. It was like that last bit of love had formed between them. They were more than just some couple, but rather two people who formed a bond deeper than anything they felt in their lives.
"It feels better today I feel like something's been lifted from our shoulders."
"Yeah, like this tension's been lifted." Howard noted.
Vince looked at his soul mate that was holding him close. Howard gazed at the one he held dear to his heart and kissed him.
"You know, I was wondering if after supper tonight we could take that walk?"
"Of course, now that Bollo's back," Howard smiled then kissed him.
And so they did. That very evening, they walked holding hands along the riverside. Vince stopped to view the city lights at night. Leaning on the railing, Howard looked at his reflection in the dark black water, remembering how this all started. It all began on the night of Howard's birthday party and it ended as quickly as it began, or so it seemed.
Howard Moon in that first kiss felt like he was awaking from a twenty year coma. In the years before the kiss had launched the "massive gayist" inside of him. Howard loved to watch Vince sleep, but for some reason couldn't explain why he enjoyed the sight of this young man asleep. He knew now he was in love with him for years, but just didn't understand what it was he felt yet.
Howard and the woman he met at his birthday party dated for two weeks. It somehow didn't feel right, and when he told her she understood, saying; "Go to him Howard."
When Vince asked him about her the day after, they were over. Howard just wanted to move on and forget about these feelings that were starting to surface for the man he knew most of his life. In his haste, he said; "We're going out tonight."
Vince's face fell. "Oh...alright."
It was later that same day when Howard came down to tell him lunch was ready. He heard Vince cry in the stock room. Howard felt like such a fool for saying what he did. But the damage was done and he wouldn't believe him now anyway. Vince came out, looking like he just lost his will to live. Vince didn't eat that day or for days afterwards. All he had was tea and biscuits and even then he barely touched them. He didn't talk much either. He didn't go clubbing: even when his friends called, he just turned them away. He just sat there, sad and depressed. Howard knew it was getting worse when Vince's showers were a mere five minute long rituals, and he stopped using his make-up. Vince normally smelled of exotic scents like spices, fruits and flowers. But that scent was gone now and was vanishing with the man he cared for.
Vince's behaviour became increasingly irregular. He would argue and get into spats with him. Vince sat for hours just looking out the window. One night, he was just kneeling there in his jeans and a black band shirt his head down on the sill. Howard knelt beside him with some dinner on a tray offering to him some soup. It was something he needed something. He was like a flower dying.
"Here, I made this for you."
Vince lifted his head; his face with tear tracks dripping down his cheeks. Howard's heart broke seeing him that upset. He had never seen him this way before, ever.
Howard took the spoon and scooped up some and offered it to him. "Hey, come on now, take some."
Vince grabbed the spoon as if it was a foreign object took one sip. He left the meal there with some bread and cheese. Howard hugged the tray close to his chest, knowing he had to do something or else lose him.  His sunshine boy was fading.
Then finally one day while in the shop, Vince's eyes had dark circles underneath them, just standing at the counter in a tired daze. Howard had him to take some stuff to the window to display. Howard went to get something from the back. When he heard a crash he rushed out and found Vince on the floor passed out from exhaustion and dehydration. At least that is what Howard was told by the doctors at the hospital who treated Vince as he laid in the gurney, an IV in his hand, undoing what he did to himself. Howard pulled up Vince's blanket over his shoulders then held his hand, waiting for him to wake up. When he did, Howard's touch made him smile weakly.
"There's the man I missed." Howard smiled back and kept touching his face.
Vince didn't leave the hospital for a few days. When Vince was released he had given a referral to a psychologist, but Vince never went. Instead Howard found the paper work in the rubbish wadded up in angry balls under the sink. When he was home Vince stood in the darkness holding himself. Looking out the windows of the flat as if searching for something in the stars that were visible though the lights of the city. He would stand there for hours, just standing in the darkness, looking. "Vince, you alright?" Howard asked.
There was never a reply. Instead he would go to their room the door slamming it angrily.
That was the strange thing – Vince's communication skills were practically gone. He would communicate with just nods or gestures. The doctors at the hospital, because of his silence, thought he was a mute or had a learning disability. They even went so far as to get him a translator and a social worker to arrange for him to learn how to sign. One theory was that Vince had a stroke and now couldn't speak. But they couldn't find anything to prove that.
One night, there was a violent heavy thunderstorm outside and Howard was watching the news and thought Vince was in his bed sound asleep. When he went to bring Vince something to drink, Howard found the room empty. He looked out the window and there he was sitting against the wall in the garden, head down, letting the rain fall on him. He grabbed the blanket and ran out to him.
"Vince, you okay?" Vince just held himself, his head on his knees. The poor thing was shivering too.
Howard knelt down, gently placing his hand on his shoulder, afraid if he touched him too hard he would fall over.
"Vince, look at me." He looked at him, worried he might have gone into a catatonic state. "Vince?"
Howard put the blanket around Vince's shoulders and he finally lifted his head again those tear tracks dripping down his eyes.
Howard helped him up and holding him close "Whatever this is and whatever is happening to you, we will get through this. I'm here for you...I promise you."
He genially carried Vince in his arms back inside and as the he was sleeping that night back in his bed Howard who was watching over him silently cried. He knew now what had happened to Vince and knew now what he had to do and he had to face the truth about himself and his feelings before it was too late.
It was the Queen's birthday and fireworks were to be fired off in her majesty's honour. Howard convinced Vince to come and enjoy the fireworks with him. They laid out a blanket and had a picnic as they enjoyed the late afternoon in the park. Vince looked a bit better that day and seemed to enjoy being outside in the warmth of a June day as far as Howard could tell. His eyes closed as he tilted his head back letting the sun hit his face.
Howard decided now was the right time "Vince I want to say something that... I...I need to tell you."
Vince sat up looked at him his blue eyes stunning Howard making him like a deer in headlights.
Howard took a breath Vince's face almost glowing in the golden light of the setting sun. "The woman I met at my birthday party, we broke up, and I broke it off. I realized now what I had before her. And what I wanted needed and desired more than anything else in this world. I have to face the truth about myself and who I really am and not worry about the consequences of what I choose. I am tired of hiding from myself. " Howard's heart started to pound when Vince actually held his hand.
He had to say it; it was now or lose the one thing that he cared for enough that he would be willing to help in his time of need it was so hard to say it but once he started to say it the words flowed out of his lips "Vince... I love you, I love you."
Vince started to smile again he carefully brushed away Howard's tears with his fingers. Vince's first words were to him were "Howard, I love you too."
Howard suddenly held him holding him tighter than anything he ever did as he cried into Vince's shoulder.
For Howard it was the release for him of frustrations he had welled up inside for many years. Vince like a loving mother comforting her child shushed him gently and whispered in his ear stroking his head. "Just let it all out. I'm here for ya, I promise you."
Howard looked up at Vince again Howard didn't worry about Vince touching him as he wiped away his tears again. He just felt happy, smiling as Howard stroked Vince's long locks of hair.
Vince placed his face closer to Howard's face looking into each other's eyes then deeply passionately and lovingly they made it official with their lips. Vince didn't have to say a word he just reached to touch the face of the man he loved. Vince kissing him with a passion Howard never felt before. They stopped to catch their breath when they said at the same time; "Let's go home."
They ran home holding hands and smiling like school boys escaping from school. Into their room Howard was against the unlocked door kissing each other as they desperately took off each other's clothes off letting them fall to the floor.
Howard as he lay on his bed holding their naked bodies together then placed his hands beside his head in defeat. Catching his breath Howard looked at Vince on top of him. In deep heavy sighs. His heart pounding harder than ever as he reached out to touch Vince's cheek Vince held desperately that hand and kissed the palm then asked; "You ready?"
Howard inhaled deep and exhaled "Yeah....'m... I'm ready..." A smile spread across his lips.
Howard, in the dim light of the flat, waited a moment. His eyes closed as he felt the first sensation from Vince's lips come. Howard's eyes opened again and reflected the first silvery fireworks burst in the sky outside their window. He reached up and smiled as a yellow one exploded right behind Vince's head, the glow of the light reached his cheeks. Howard felt like he was touching the face of his own personal sun, beaming down upon him. Vince Noir: his sunshine boy. Another sensation of pleasure and again the fireworks went off lighting the dark room briefly. Howard moaned and yelped. Each feeling was so unreal.
Yes...
It was the most amazing thing Howard ever felt in his life. He reached the heights and holding into Vince's hand to steady himself as he shook violently, crying out in the rapture of the moment. He felt like he was floating away from his old self. Another new Howard Moon emerged during this the dream-like state.
They watched the fireworks explode as they lay together in bed holding each other. Howard looked at his new lover then kissed him.
"I love you, my sunshine...my sun in the sky, lighting my days." Vince lay still as Howard touched and pet his face. Smiling back Vince stroked Howard's cheek.
"I love you, my moon, my light in the darkest of nights."
This was to Howard his new birthday, the day he realized who he was and what he desired more than anything and had the courage to stand up and get what he wanted…and he did it. He did it...and it felt wonderful.
The next morning, Howard woke up alone. He wondered if this was all just a wonderful dream. He put on his house coat and opened the bedroom door to reveal Vince in the sunlight, the rays beaming on him in the open window with his hand outstretched as a bird landed on one of his long slender fingers. The bird chirped and Vince looked at Howard as he emerged from the bedroom.
"Oh, him?" Vince asked. "That's my new boyfriend, Howard."
The bird got off and ate the bird seed that was spread on the sill.
Howard, unafraid, put his arms around Vince, laying his head on his shoulders. Vince smiled at him, putting a hand on Howard's grasp to hold hands, forgetting the world around them as they kissed each other a good morning kiss. The bird then chirped and bobbed its head to look at Howard. Vince looked at Howard's face.
"Yeah, he's a genius boyfriend, isn't he?" Howard gave a throaty chuckle and smiled, kissing him again. Vince then it seemed returned from the depths of his depression, and the sun shined in their lives once more.
