Description There was no snow just warm weather and sunshine as they made their happy journey to the river that flowed outside their college in a wonderful forest.  Young men and women in cosplay and kimonos both hand made and bought were dancing some singing Japanese pop tunes delicately waving branches of flowering apple blossoms that they used to decorate the bank of the river.

This was their day to celebrate the coming promise of spring.  On today the doll festival "Hina Matsuri."

Even though they were in Michigan they were today in Japan to rub and send away all their misery of the past year slowly building up.

When it was set up one of the girls in a maid costume handed out "sacred" dolls made out of paper and under lighting folded paper they rubbed them as they were told over the internet all over their bodies. Some of the men went too far and rubbed their crotches one got a paper cut. Laughing at his misfortune they sent their worries, bad luck, misery and fears away. Telling it as they threw it into the river "Go Away!"

"Get lost!"

"Fuck off!"

As one young woman looked at her bad luck drift away she took a deep breath and pondered: Is this our future? Will we be wearing kimonos and performing these ancient rites as a more open community?

She realized at that moment we are slowly coming to terms with the past and we are trying to find the balance that makes the world a more harmonious place.  We know now that nature is a sacred place and that there is much unseen.  But how to use this tool that was the question we have yet to answer.

But till then the youth will send their bad luck away on paper and then go back to our lives eat pocky, oniguri and watch anime, gawk at yoai and manga. While waiting for the world to change around us hopefully for the better.  Hopefully we will find that balance between tradition and the ever changing modern world.
