Description

The Preface:

Four weeks ago Victoria tripped over a box in the garage and broke her tibia and fibula at about the middle of the leg.  Her partner Diana was at home and she was able to help Victoria hop to the car and then drive her to the ER.  X-rays shows a serious fracture of both bones.  Even after a large shot of morphine, the setting process was excruciating but finally Victoria was treated with a long leg cast and admitted to a room to rest for the night.  The next day the swelling in her leg was not excessive and she was released after lunch.

Diana stopped at the pharmacy to get the prescription for pain medication filled and Victoria was soon resting at home with her leg propped up on several pillows.  This would be her home base while working with her laptop but she still couldn’t keep up with everything like she could at the office.

One evening about two weeks after the accident while she and Diana were having a little outing to allow Victoria to get some fresh air, she stubbed the big toe of her left leg while trying to hop up on a curb.  The pain was horrible and she laid down immediately on the grass, crying.   The first thing that flashed through her mind was that she had re-broken her leg.  They realized this was really serious and Diana got the car and they went back to the ER.

X-rays showed her big toe was dislocated.  Her original fractures were not disturbed enough to merit a whole new cast.  A toe spica cast was added to her long leg cast and she was allowed to go home with strict instructions to not put any weight at all on her left foot.

After a few days Victoria was frustrated by her inability to take care of everything with the thoroughness that she was used to.  Furthermore she was bored at home when Diana went to work and she missed her office mates.  Three weeks after her original accident she returned to the office and received a joyful greeting from her staff.  Now she could really focus on her pet project, the Jackson account.  That company required careful scrutiny since their own bookkeeping was rather lax, to say the least.

A week after returning to work, Victoria went to the lounge after regular hours to eat her sandwich for supper and get a cup of coffee.  She wanted to do some work on her small laptop but an important file was not loaded.  Rather than crutch all the back to her office, she called Diana, to have her email it.

  Let’s listen:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Victoria :  Hello, Di.  I came to the lounge to get some coffee and eat the sandwich you made for me.  I’ve got my laptop but I don’t have a file that I need.  I don’t feel like crutching clear back to my office.  Can you find it on my home computer and email it to me please?  It’s an excel file named:  Jackson_200611.

Diana:  Sure, Vic,  just a minute…let me see.  Ok, that’s in the Jackson folder, right?  Ok, I found it.  It’s on its way.

Victoria, after a few seconds: Ok, I have it,  thanks, Di.  Can you pick me up at 8:00, please?

Diana:  Yes, of course.  By the way, how’s your leg doing today?  I know you were not sleeping very well last night.

Victoria:  Well, it’s not too bad right now.  I have it propped up and as long as I don’t have to crutch around, it’s ok.  The crutches are a lot of trouble though. Very tiring.  Normally whenever I come to the lounge during the day, my assistant, Natalie comes with me and she carries my stuff and even gets my coffee. Tonight I didn’t take into account how hard it would be by myself.  My tote bag was getting pretty heavy by the time I got to the lounge.

Oh, gee,  right now my toe is starting to hurt…more than my leg even. I took a pill while ago, it should take effect pretty soon. I’ll be ok.

They said after a couple of months maybe I can get a walking cast.  God, I hope so, that will be such a relief.

Ok, Di. Thanks again.  I’ll work for a while and see you at 8:00.

Bye for now, love you.

Diana: Love you too.  See you soon.
