"Ellie? Hey, baby girl, we gotta get a move on."
Ellie blinked back into reality, looking up at Joel. "Huh? Oh uh... yeah..."
Joel took a look around before sighing, sitting beside the girl. Ellie shifted uncomfortably, staring at the ground in front of her as Joel got comfy. "Something on your mind?"
Ellie hesitated, planning her words carefully. "...if we... ever go to Boston... can we not kill any Clickers?" She asked, looking over her weapons. She knew how insane she sounded, but hell, if only he knew what happened back then...
As she could've guessed, Joel looked at her as if she'd suddenly become a Bloater herself. "Why the hell not?" Ellie groaned to herself, not willing to spill her guts at the moment. "Can't we talk later, Joel? Didn't you say we needed to go, anyway?"
But Joel hardly budged. "Look, Ellie. Somethin' has been bothering you, I can tell. You've been quiet. And I'm alright with sitting here until you say what's chewing you up."
Ellie looked at him, half furious, half thankful. "Fine. If you really need to know," "I do," Joel nodded. With a quiet hmph of annoyance, Ellie closed her eyes as she tried to recall the memories she buried.
"C-C-Combo breaker!~" You screamed, laughing with delight. Ellie couldn't help but laugh along with her best friend. "Dude, there's no way you actually hit that!" Ellie pointed at the car you just hit with a brick, pretending to be oblivious to the huge crack in the window. You gasped in disbelief at her doubt, and you puffed your lower lip out. "There's ENTIRELY A WAY, EL." You crossed your arms sassily, looking away from the girl. Ellie giggled at your act and punched your shoulder, nearly sending you flying off the second floor of the broken down mall.
"Chill, dude! You totally nailed the bastard!" At her words, you perked up. "I did, didn't I?" You smirked. Ellie punched your shoulder again before heading to the stairs, hopping down them. You gasped in delight, grabbing your friend by the shoulders as you steered her towards the blinding neon shop.
"Look at all that candy!" Squealing, you squished your face up to the glass, in which Ellie did the same. Upon merely glancing at the store's displays, she frowned in confusion. "[Y/N], you're totally delusional. It's empty."
You frowned as well, squinting hard. "Oh, bro, you're totally right. No fair. The Clickers got here before we did!"
"What's up with you and the infected?"
Blinking, you looked at your friend, whom still had her face pressed to the glass. You never really thought about your interest with the infected that destroyed your world, but you guessed it didn't matter since you didn't have anything to lose anyhow.
"Uh... well don't you think they're cool, too?" You asked. Ellie finally pulled away and looked at you. "Not really. I mean what's to like?"
"The Clickers are the only ones I like, I mean. The others can suck my non existent di-" "Okay I get it!" Ellie made a face, causing you to laugh. "But for real, El! It's cool how like the fungus grew on their face and now they kinda remind me of crabs," Now it was Ellie's turn to laugh as you gazed ahead thoughtfully.
"Crabs?! Are you serious man?!" You grinned and nodded, not sure what else to say. "I mean I guess it's like uh... I dunno. Just, they remind me of crabs." "Maybe you're just hungry," Ellie pointed out. You shrugged. "Maybe. Maybe I'm hungry for crabs!"
You flashed a wicked grin at her, putting your hands up like claws. "Or maybe I'm turning into a flesh eating crab! And I'm gonna eat you!" Ellie laughed more as you lunged for her, and she swiftly avoided your attack.
"And [Y/N] chased me around for a few hours..." Ellie added, nodding to herself. "But I never saw them again after that. So I thought they got infected, so I don't want to shoot any Clickers. For them," She concluded as Joel stood. "Well, we can always go look for 'em. If you want, that is."
Ellie stood as well, thinking about the offer. "That'd be... that'd be cool. Thanks , Joel."
-Time lapse-
"And then they... holy shit, look! " Ellie broke into a sprint before Joel was able to ask any questions, forcing him to follow her. It was an old building up ahead, and the years had obviously been cruel to it, as the purpose for the building couldn' be made out from all the vines and holes in the more than less standing walls. Nonetheless, Ellie rushed in, Joel right behind her.
"[Y/N] use to take me here when-..." Ellie fell silent as her gaze fell behind the counter. "Ellie? What's the-"
"Its [Y/N]," Ellie whispered, looking down at the decaying corpse. You'd been bit in the ankle, she acknowledged. And, you had tried to cut it off. A wrist was cuffed to the metal part of the counter, making it so you were unable to move from this spot.
Ellie recognized the shirt you were currently wearing; It was the one she'd given to you as a gift when Ellie was forced to leave, and her friend had been so fond of it. Of course, she couldn't bring up the subject to your adorable face about leaving, but how could she? You'd turn into a total reck.
You - at least, what remained - snarled at her, not yet a Clicker, which surprised her. Without Ellie, she always thought you'd go off and get bit intentionally, turning into a Clicker quicker than anyone else because of your will to become one. Well, she thought you had a will to be one, anyhow.
Ellie kneeled down to get a better look at her past friend. You were pretty fucked up for the most part. Head partially bashed in, stab wounds all over your legs - She was surprised she even recognized you.
"Heh... Hey there, zombiefied [Y/N]. Remember me...? Yeah... It's your dumbass of a friend..." Ellie grumbled to herself as you grabbed at her, but she was well out of your reach.
She stood and sighed, and Joel put a hand on her shoulder. "We need to get moving. I hear runners."
Ellie nodded to him as he gathered his things. She glanced back at you. You always said you would love being a zombie. But you looked so... desperate. Scared. Something along those lines, Ellie supposed.
Ellie gritted her teeth, squeezing her eyes shut as she drew her knife. No, it wouldn't be right to leave you like this. It had to end now.
Trying not to think at all, Ellie took her knife and clutched it. She had to do this, for you. For her best friend.
Quicker than intended, she rammed the knife through your blank eye, causing you to immediately fall limp.
Ellie bit her lip as tears threatened to fall. Grabbing her knife, she grunted at Joel to get moving, taking a glance at your body before running after him. What had she done?
"I'm sorry, [Y/N]," Ellie whispered. "You had to be put at rest..."
