It didn't happen often, but when it did, the nightmares came hard and fast. They were always very vivid, and they stuck in his mind for days without fading afterwards. He would wake screaming, and then be unable to sleep the rest of the night.
"You look awful," Katara commented one evening. "Have you been sleeping at all?"
He ran a hand through his hair and turned away.
"Zuko!" He could hear the pitch in her voice rising a little bit. She took a deep breath and continued quietly, "You need to get some rest. We've got a long way to go, and it won't do either of us any good if you're already exhausted before we even start."
"I can't," he whispered.
Katara stepped closer and put a hand on his shoulder. He turned then, and met her eyes. It was then that she saw the haunted look on his face, and she realized what must have been happening.
"Don't leave me." It was spoken like someone who was dying.
"Zuko, I'm not going anywhere."
