Description I was struck by the textures and colors of the rust and old wood.

I was wondering what these things were, so I asked a trusted and brilliant friend. Here's the info. he gave me:

"They look to be weights for pressure relief valves. The pressure at which the valve opens depends on the moment arm of the lever comprised of the arm and the weight on its end and the diameter of the orifice of the valve. There is also a multiplier relevant to the numbers of teeth on the two toothed wheels, one on the arm and the other on the valve itself."

So, now we know!

Thanks, Darrel!

I have no idea about that. Just want to find out more, so I'll start looking up information on trains. I'm going to start finding trainyards and doing more photography of them, since I like them so much!

Now thats fascinating! i just wonder what they were used in? application wise? i've never saw anything like these before.

Yes, this was the first time I had seen them, as well. My friend who gave me the information has told me more than I've ever heard about train parts. I tried going online, but found model train sites and general overviews rather than anything specifically about the mechanics (other than power - steam, electricity, diesel, etc.) If you ever find out, please let me know!
