He is defined by the smells of grease and paint, of sweat and the cloying odour of animals and waste. His high boyish voice fills the tent, drowns out the noises of the crowd, as he casts his spiels in the way of the wizards of old. And that was what he was to the public. Outside the pillars of light, down the makeshift stage, he stays in the corners, and he listens. He knows all secrets, and they make up for the parts of him where people have memories and feelings.
