Description
Version 2.0 of my contribution to nillia 's 'Character Is'-Project . Since I finally learned to work with slices, I thought I'd do some revision work. Yay for the concept of lifelong learning!Dear Van Fanel fangirls, please stop violating one of my favourite anime characters. He's not like that. If he knew what you keep doing to him, he'd freak out and mutilate you with his precious sword -- or introduce you to Escaflowne's weaponry.
Characterization is not just a long and complicated word; it actually takes more work to do a correct characterization than develop a good plot. Frankly, Casanova!Van is not the Van Fanel we know and love; that's what Allen Shezar is for. All right?

Whenever Van clapped eyes on his brother or even heard people talking about Folken, he was guaranteed to flip out. It's been a long time since I last watched the series, but I could never forget his facial expression whenever he did ^__^

Personally, I am torn between the 'office clerk' panel and the dragon panel as favourite panel. Those are both situations I can totally imagine Van's reaction --- and love his character even more because of it.

Hum. Have you read Folken-centric fics and have encountered enough popular fandom misconceptions to make up a whole panel?
I have to admit of not reading any Folken, centric stuff. Besides, Escaflowne doesn't seem to be popular at the moment; I belive mine was, for a long time, the only Escaflowne-related contribution to that project.
Someone should have targeted Dilandau, too, don't you think?

Hmmm. I read several Folken-centric fics. Some of them were interesting, very good wtitten and memorable. But.. I didin't notice so much fandom misconceptions; so you're right, it would be difficult to make a whole panel.
I don't know anything about Escaflowne's popularity, because I've watched this anime only one month ago and it was my first time..

Well, I believe a series' popularity depends on whenever it is being aired on TV. Since a large part of the fanfiction community are US American citizens, I have witnessed certain series getting a veritable boost as soon as they were aired on AdultSwim, a US adult-orientated cartoon station.
The 'Visions of Escaflowne' fandom, I'm afraid, has had its more active times a couple of years ago...

..But in any case the general popularity means nothing. People still love this series. The popularity peak can't last forever. Nothing can be popular forever. But nevertheless for each work of art always there will be its audience.

Nope, definitely not. You won't believe how many fics put him behind a desk. I tried to imagine how he would react if somebody sat him down in front of a computer and told him to draw up a powerpoint presentation. This was the result ^__^ .

You know, This is the very reason I don't read Esca-fic. I was afreid the writers would do this to the characters [shiver]. I prize Escaflowne too much to have it besmirched in my mind so! All that said, this is a nice showing, and quite a nice manifesto. Thank you.

There are some Escaflowne fanauthors who have a very good grip on characterization, making it a blast to read their work. Sadly enough, they are difficult to find and it is even more difficult to find finished stories. If you are interested in reading some of those, feel free to contact me; I don't mind sharing

Go to my profile page on fanfiction [link] and visit the favourites. I recommend reading 'Hemisphere' by sanctus-seira (unfortunately it is still unfinished and I haven't heard from the author lately---) and 'Mystic Eyes' by Aishuu (another unfinished one).
There are also several good stories by Starry Eyed Wonder that are a blast to read, but technically they don't have much to do with the 'Escaflowne'-universe anymore. In matters of characterization the author does exactly what I targeted with my panel 'Van Fanel Is' - her Van is an insufferable, self-complaisant Casanova and businessman - but they are so well-written that I like the stories anyway.
You could also check for the c2-community 'Emeralds and Rubies' for good V/H stories. It was brought to my attention as they notified me that they included my own story, 'Colours', and I checked it. It lists a few very nice stories, but you have to look for them more closely
