FIRES, FIRES AND MORE FIRES
For the last few months, basically parts of the province of British Columbia was on fire.  There was a massive fire across the lake, and someone started a fire on this side of the lake.  I had some stuff ready to go in case of evacuation orders.

Massive Fires from Kamloops to Penticton, most were out of control and listed at 10 000 acres each, and at least one of these fires is still burning to simply burn away dry underbrush that was been sitting on the ground as far back at 1960.  Then a fire tornado happened and bears ran firefighters out of their camp.

Due to the local fires and problems with a flat mate,  I had no computer for 7 weeks, so working on my renders is not possible without my Desktop workstation.

STORY
The sun hung high in the sky, casting a warm and inviting glow over the Mexican Hat Hummingbird Sanctuary. Nestled in a valley, surrounded by lush vegetation and vibrant wildflowers, the sanctuary was a haven for these tiny, iridescent birds. It was a place where the frenetic pace of life seemed to slow, and the world was hushed in reverence for nature's delicate wonders.

Athena and Yatzil was standing beneath a towering oak tree. Yatzil was a curious and bright-eyed young girl, nearly 22 years old, was as captivated by the natural world as her mother.  Corva and Violet arrived first along with Ruby.  They were greeted warmly by Athena.  Both Yatzil  and Athena instantly recognized Corva and Violet's inner pain,  they have been through so much and survived.

Yatzil had a light breakfast ready for Violet and Corva.  Two dozen hummingbirds had made an appearance so far.

An hour later,  everyone had gathered to a new shady spot.  The warm sun filtered through the trees, casting dappled shadows on the ground.  Yatzil and Athena, her mother, sat beside her.   Corva's gaze turned to the vibrant hummingbirds darting around, their iridescent feathers glistening in the sunlight.

Corva turned to Yatzil, her eyes alight with excitement. "Did you see that blue hummingbird just now? It was incredible!"

Yatzil nodded, "I did. These little birds are such marvels of nature."

Athena, who had been quietly observing the conversation, finally spoke. Her voice carried the weight of wisdom that came with age. "Indeed, they are. Hummingbirds have always fascinated me. They are so tiny."

Corva was curious "Athena, how did you first become interested in hummingbirds?"

Athena chuckled softly. "Oh, it was many years ago. I was just a young girl then, spending a summer with my grand mother in the countryside. She had a beautiful garden filled with flowers that attracted hummingbirds. I used to sit here just like we are now, and she would tell me stories about these tiny, magical birds."

Corva leaned forward, intrigued. "What kind of stories ?"

"She would tell me that hummingbirds were messengers from the spirit world, bringing us joy and reminding us to savor the sweetness of life. She said their iridescent feathers were gifts from the heavens, and each one held a different message for those who paid attention."

Corva watched a hummingbird flit by, its wings a blur of motion. "That's a beautiful way to think about them. Do you still believe in those stories?"

Athena smiled warmly. "I do, in my own way. Even now, as I watch these hummingbirds, I am reminded that no matter how small or delicate we may seem, we can achieve remarkable feats if we persevere."

Yatzil nodded in agreement, "We are warriors."

Athena nodded. "Exactly, Life can be fleeting, much like the moments we share with these hummingbirds. But in their presence, we learn to appreciate the fleeting beauty that surrounds us."

Athena, Violet, Corva and Yatzil continued to watch the hummingbirds dart and dance among the flowers, Corva couldn't help but feel a deeper connection with these tiny creatures among the vibrant flowers.

Julia and Maggie arrived next,  Julia's warmth was the epitome of grace and kindness.   Maggie was holding on to Julia's hand and hiding behind her most of the day.  Yatzil had a second light breakfast ready for Maggie and Julia.

Afterwards, the group agreed to walk one of the paths. The birds were a kaleidoscope of colours, from the emerald green of the Anna's Hummingbird to the fiery red throat of the Rufous Hummingbird.  "Look, Violet," Athena whispered, "Do you see that one? The one with the iridescent blue throat? It's a Blue-throated Hummingbird. They're quite rare around here. One of the main reasons the sanctuary is built here."

Violet squinted her eyes and followed Athena's gaze.    Yatzil handed a piece of watermelon to Violet, who eagerly took it and munched away. "Hummingbirds are like fairies in the garden." Violet commented.

"What is that ?"  little Maggie asked, pointing at a nest in a mountain ash tree, where a breeding pair of white and blue birds were guarding hatchlings.

Yatzil had a little laugh,  "That is a Flying Tit Mouse."

Maggie was confused,  "A flying mouse ?"

"No" Yatzil told her, "Its a bird with a terrible name"

The day continued, with laughter and stories filling the air as the women and their daughters marveled at the hummingbirds. Occasionally, one of the tiny Hummingbirds would hover near them, and usually paying close attention to Corva.  One of the Hummingbirds was tired out and found a sleeping spot on Ruby, the dragon.

The sun reached its zenith, Athena spread out a checkered blanket, Julia, Maggie, Athena and Corva sat down with Yatzil.  Hummingbirds continued their graceful dance among the flowers. Corva rested her eyes for a second and fell asleep.  Athena sat on a weathered wooden bench with a glass of wine, gazing out at the fluttering spectacle before them.  Julia and Athena had an instant connection and quiet understanding of each other,  Maggie was in awe of her surroundings,  "I remember when my little Maggie took her first steps. It was like watching a miracle unfold before my eyes."

Athena nodded, her own eyes twinkling with memories. "When my Tina, said her first word. She was jumping up and down,  saying NO NO over and over again,  turned out she was trying to tell us that is was snowing outside, first snow of the winter."

Julia's gaze shifted to a pair of hummingbirds engaged in a graceful dance mid-air. "Moments of pure joy and wonder, they make all the sleepless nights and challenges worthwhile. I often dream about the kind of future I want for Maggie, full of love, happiness, and endless opportunities."

Athena sipped her wine, when a brilliant red hummingbird darted close, its iridescent feathers shimmering in the sunlight.  "I just want to protect my little girl. I am pretty tempted to stay near her,  whack every threat near her with a baseball bat."

The mothers continued to chat, their hopes and dreams intertwining like the vines of the lush flowers around them. They talked about the challenges of motherhood, the late-night cuddles, and the laughter that filled their homes.   Yatzil and Violet went for a walk.  The air was filled with the sweet scent of wildflowers. They ventured deeper into the sanctuary, the vibrant colours of flowers painted the landscape. Tall, slender stalks, crowned with orange-yellow blossoms that resembled sombreros, swayed gently in the breeze. The flowers were a beacon, a siren call for hummingbirds, and it wasn't long before more iridescent birds made their appearance.

Yatzil and Violet found a comfortable spot to sit amidst the flowers, a place where they had an unobstructed view of the bustling hummingbird activity. Yatzil pulled out a notebook and a set of coloured pencils from her backpack, various wildlife, trees, flowers and landscapes being stretched.   For an hour, they sat in near silence, their eyes locked on hummingbirds of various species, from the vibrant violet-crowned woodnymphs to the dainty white-eared hummingbirds, flitted about, their wings a blur of motion. The air was filled with the soft whirring of their wings, sounding like tiny engines propelling them from one flower to another.  Each bird staked its claim on certain flowers, engaging in territorial skirmishes that were both fierce and fascinating. Yatzil diligently sketched these scenes in her notebook. They reveled in the stillness of the moment, the warm sun on their skin, and the distant murmur of a nearby stream.

Eventually, Violet and Yatzil rose from their spot, stretching their limbs and walking back to the adults.

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow over the cozy patio where three women had gathered. Corva sat in a wicker chair. Athena leaned against a stone pillar, her eyes fixed on the dancing flames of a nearby fire pit. Julia sat cross-legged on a cushioned bench.

Amidst their laughter and shared confidences, the patio seemed to come alive with a positive  energy. The fire pit crackled, casting a warm, inviting glow. Each woman was a testament to the vast spectrum of human experience, a reminder that pleasure could be found in the simplest of moments and the grandest of adventures, light and darkness.
