Boys club BOYS CLUB!! I love these guysss
THANK GOODNESS for the extension or else I would NOT have finished this! I think this is one of the longest I have spent on a piece and it's all because I had to redraw the sky three times before I was happy with it x) But I'm so pleased to be entering RDHS again, the title is a nod to the fact that it was the first HARPG show that I entered, but also that Cronenburg stables is where Mez Jr was born < 33

STORY
------------
“Is it weird, do you think, for him to be back here?” Lloyd mused, taking the reins gently in his hand and looking Junior in the eyes. In response, the stallion let out a massive yawn, giving his neck a shake. “There’s your answer,” Leo replied as he checked the tightness of his girth. “I don’t think he’s really that fussed. He’s a good traveller, this is just another place to him.”
“But it’s not, though,” Lloyd pressed. “Wouldn’t it be strange to him if he met his sire? What about his dam?”
“I really don’t know what point you’re trying to make. Yeah, sure, maybe he knows something is different about this place, but as long as it’s not stressing him out, it’s fine.” Leo patted the horse’s spotted rump. Junior regarded him curiously, then arched his neck to lip softly at his pockets. Leo took the opportunity to give him a quick hug, stroking down the length of his blaze, before gently pushing his head away. “Besides,” he continued. “It wouldn’t be all that weird if you went home and saw your parents, would it?”
Lloyd shrugged, shifting uncomfortably in his wheelchair. “You don’t know my parents.”
Leo fought a smile, and turned away to hide his face, pretending to busy himself with a speck of mud on Junior’s back. The horse’s skin twitched irritably and he swished his tail. Lloyd was still frowning, so Leo decided to change the subject. “Oh my god, it’s so hot,” He groaned, fanning himself with a hand. He wasn’t making it up either – his back was sticky with sweat and he could feel it trickling down his forehead. “There’s absolutely no way I’m wearing that jacket.”
“What?” Lloyd exclaimed, his eyebrows raised. “You have to wear it, it’s hardly proper turnout if you don’t!”
Leo shook his head. “The judges have said that because of the weather, it’s not a necessity.”
“On your own head be it.”
“Sure.”
Leo placed his hands on his hips, looking out across the showgrounds, trying to size up the competition. “Alright,” he said after a moment. “I’m gonna go warm up, I think.”
“You think?”
“You know what I mean.”
Lloyd grinned. “Yeah.”
Leo gathered up his reins and swung into the saddle, taking a moment to settle himself. Junior chewed the bit impatiently, his ears flicking as he took in the surrounding noises. “Right, I’ll see you in a bit, then?” Leo said, gesturing to the dressage arena.
“Yeah,” Lloyd was still grinning. Leo narrowed his eyes, looking the man up and down.
“What is it?”
Lloyd shrugged furtively. “Nothing.”
“No, come on – tell me.”
“It’s nothing, I swear. I just think it’s a little funny that you need me to read for you.”
“Oh, come on!” Leo rolled his eyes, nudging Junior’s sides to push him into a walk. “I don’t want to hear this from you.”
Lloyd laughed. “I told you it was nothing!”
“Yeah, and I shouldn’t have asked,” Leo huffed, though he wasn’t really angry. This was just Lloyd being his usual irritating self. “You’d’ve gotten me to be your reader if you were in this class.”
“Nope, no way.”
“What, you reckon you’d have just gone in without one?”
“Nah, I’d have asked Monica instead.”
Leo stared down at Lloyd for a moment, his brow slightly furrowed and a mildly confused smile on his lips. Lloyd stared back, still smiling as though he was waiting for a punchline to hit. Sighing, Leo pinched the bridge of his nose with one hand. “Alright,” he said. “I will see you later."
