Description

From my old drawing book, I drew these back in 2015. These were just some panel redraws as drawing practice of my favorite characters and quotes from the manga. Now that the series has ended after I've followed it for over 5 years, I went back to these pictures and they hit very differently now.

For a dark fantasy series I never should've expected a happy ending, but after years of attachment to my favourite characters and seeing them learn and grow, seeing the ending play out was never going to satisfy me. I've never felt so frustrated and hollow at the ending of a series.

I started the series back when things seemed simple, there was lots of mystery but so much hope and fighting spirit. Everyone still felt on the moral high-ground, the characters felt understood and the fight worth it. I cosplayed as my favourite characters when they were still alive   I went to the Sega Joypolis which was covered in Sonic and Attack on Titan stuff simultaneously which was one of best things ever

The paradigm shift and thematic upheaval and the tragedy the followed to the end was tough to read. There was understandable grey morality, characters in extreme turmoil with themselves and their actions and many established elements were re-imagined. But the pointless deaths, hasty and meaningless motives and rush to a conclusion just left me thinking 'there had to be another way.' They butchered a character I loved to beyond recognition to even themselves for a plot-point and sacrifice that was honestly pointless. I felt like when all the mystery was running out, they turned a good character into an angsty, 'misunderstood' villain just for fun. The series just laughed at all the things it conveyed up until that point.

I'm just going to forget the ending, be happy at the amazing parts of the series, I just have some of the amazing theories I read online be the cannon ending for me   It may seem sad but I'm not accepting that ending.

The amazing thing about series and their fanart/fanfics is that any point of time in a work can be immortalised and stretched on indefinitely in that moment. That character was still alive then, this event hasn't happened yet, I can have more of this interaction/happiness etc. Sometimes I feel fan artists and writers do a better job than the source material. I've never felt a greater appreciation of Alternate Universe writing either, but that's likely because I've never disliked an ending so much.

Time to say goodbye to an overall amazing series and watch something warm and fuzzy to recover

TLDR: I loved this series more than most others and it broke me
