Society6 ||Tumblr || Note for commission infoΒA piece I did a few months back for a contest (that I didn't win, but hey, was still a good challenge)!
This was actually really fun and challenging to do, I'm not used to drawing more 'childish' figures, so this was really a first for me! Really tired to play with colours here and show off my Canadian pride at the same time too

If I may give a suggestion to give the image a smoother look (assuming you work with photoshop and/or with different layers).
Your image has really sharp lines around the leaves, the birds and other subjects. You could blend/integrate them in more in your image when you would flatten the image when you are finished and use the blur tool to soften the lines a bit. Another thing you can do is to use a transparant wet brush and blend the lines in.

Actually, I'm happy to hear you thoughts because I do think they're wonderful ideas! I feel like if the birds/leaves where more blurred, it would give them the appearance they where 'moving' and give it some depth. I'm definitely make note of that, thanks

It looks wonderful!! I seriously don't know what AN was thinking not choosing this, but oh well. At least you have a very pretty picture left in your portfolio.
And where to begin? This is just so extremely detailed that I could only imagine taking several tens of hours to do this. I think she turned out very cute and innocent.Β
I really enjoy seeing you draw younger characters! (maybe it's the shota-lover within me huhuhuhu), but I think you really nailed it with the pose and the larger eyes.Β
I think this is the first time I saw you draw small animals aside from the bird on your dmmd print, but JESUS you're good at it. The geese turned out amazing!
The atmosphere of the piece is also very nicely drawn, and I love the cherry blossoms and lighting you used. And how the CN tower had a bit of a fade at the top.Β

So, what submission beat this? Just curious, because I think this piece is pretty good, and I have to imagine that the winning prize had an insane amount of detail thrown into their one.
I've just noticed that I've never seen an image of yours that had a person younger then 21 star in it, and I'm glad that that fact hasn't inhibited your skills, although this high schooler doesn't look that much younger, so whatever. As usual, the shading and lighting techniques seem to have are very many and very apparent, especially with her clothing, and I like how you put little strings on her skirt as an extra detail. While her face is a little sharp (the chin), it still retains a youthful image, complimented well with the many straps of her hair blowing in the wind.
Besides the girl, the background has a very nice array of cherry blossoms behind her, while having very Canadian looking leaves blow through the air, which is an interesting mis ash of Japanese and Canadian foliage, accompanied by the giant Seattle (what I think it's called) point in the background. The flock of geese in the picture seem to compliment the foilage, and look very close designed to the real deal, as well as the beaver on the ground (although a little less then the geese).
I definitely like this piece, and I hope this at least place in the top five of whatever contest you submitted it to. Good job as always!

Yah, I do think this is the 'youngest' person I've drawn so far, but it's good to hear that it came out looking youthful! The contest called for a Japanese/Canadian mix, so happy you caught that detail, the tower in the back is also the CN tower that we have in Canada that's pretty well-known, although after googling the one in Seattle, they do kind of look similar! Also, the beaver has to be my favourite part, photobombing the whole imagine
