Description
The leaves had far fallen and the trees were bare, prepared for the winter to come. Her current herd welcomed her and her foal with open hearts, but Samara still felt uneasy. Memories of the event still bound to her from the year prior whirled around her mind as if it were just yesterday. She had such strong bonds with her previous herd, her stallion most of all. The dry brush left ample opportunity for incident to happen, and incident happened. Her stallion called to her through thick flames but no path was safe enough for Rohan to traverse. Samara can deal with the pain of a burn, but she could not bear witness to her foal scorched. She could not even say it was a hard decision, turning to run, but her foal meant more to her than life itself. Samara pulled Rohan by her too short mane, keeping her near as they sprinted away from the fire, the safety of the herd, and the dead forest itself.
Now Samara walks safe among Henson's group. There are plenty of mares to talk to, foals for Rohan to play with and Henson was well attentive to her, to all of them. Somber memories of her stallions expression as she ran from the flames engulfed her vision. She fell back from Henson's troupe for a moment, recollecting herself. She must stay strong for Rohan, keep a brave face for her daughter. The same daughter who was currently weaving the saplings with the other foals, trouncing through the brush and the leaves, each little hoof making a not so little crunching sound. Seeing them at their happiest is all she wanted right now.
Rohan caught Samara's gaze and smiled. "Mom, mom, come here look!" she called. Samara's heavy legs closed the distance to the foals play area. "Watch, mom" Rohan said as she circled a particularly large tree, "we found these leaves and we want to see who can jump the highest over them." The grullo mare now assumed judge of the foals little competition. First, little Leander, his spindly legs just shy of clearing the long pile of leaves, a little disappointed in himself but nothing he would not get past in the next minute or so. Second, Brandy, the firecracker who would not let anyone or anything keep her from her goals. The filly rocketed toward the pile, clearing it easily in one quick leap, ending her spectacle tail high and prancing back to the line. Her and Leander exchanged raspberries all the while Rohan called to Samara "Are you watching? Watch Watch"
Samara watched her foal paw the dirt, revving her engines. The little filly started off strong and fast, projected to well clear the oh so daunting pile of orange leaves- OH, OH NO. Rohan came to a screeching halt, her footing giving out right before her take off. A root had gone unnoticed by her, catching her front hoof at the last minute, sending the little foal careening into the leaf pile. Samara trotted forth, followed by the other foals, pawing and blowing the leaves away in search of her daughter among the sticks and leaves. Rohan comically snapped her head out of the pile "OKAY BUT DID YOU SEE THAT??" Samara just huffed at her accident prone child, rolling her eyes and holding in her own relieved chuckle at the action. The other foals quickly gathered around Rohan, chatter of 'are you okay?' and 'that was so sick!' swirled through the air. Samara might be missing her herd and the comfort of her past, but seeing her little Rohan overflowing with joy and laughter out weighs anything she could really dream of.
