Description My first try ever to paint with acrylics ^^
I can safely say that I really adored the experience <3
It felt so strange at first, so different from watercolours... So intense while watercolour is so light, like a breeze~
I'm so used to add water when I want a lighter shade! Here I had to add white paint ^^
I love how intense those colours are. I especially love the skin texture (I know, he looks like he spent his whole summer holidays sunbathing... That golden tan suits him very well though XD)
I'm not used at all to add some (lighter shade) paint for the lighter shades O_o
I've been adding successively darker tones since so long (be it with watercolour or coloured pencils!)

So I'm totally trilled by that new experience ^^

I painted on watercolour paper, since I have no canvas

I very much like the outcome. The colours really are very saturated. As for the experience you you're writing about - I always found it easier to add the highlights (I used coloured pencils where this was possible), so for me the watercolour approach would be quite difficult.

Yes, the intensity of acrylic painting colours is astonishing.
Trying both techniques is very interesting ^^
I believe your digital painting is close to the acrylic painting?

Acrylics definitely are intense! Both in color and in how fast you have to paint with them (they dry much quicker than oils--I remember from trying one painting of each the Christmas before the last one, as our project at my godparents' that year).

I think you did a fine job, especially your first try!

Yes, it dries so fast ^^ I used a water spray from time to time to delay it

Thank you dear I love that painting so much ^^

It´s really beautiful! He looks so serene and clearly enjoying the moment. I love how you did his skin, so natural! And maybe he did go sunbathing, he totally deserves some lazy time at the seaside And it suits him so well! You are really very talented my dear <3
And I am so happy that you decided to try acrylics! I just knew that you would love them! Totally different from watercolors and so confusing at first, but they give so much freedom. And I love that it´s possible to just paint over anything to change it
I have just got a set of acrylic paints to be able to try them at home. I will use watercolor paper for them too

I really like how the wind seems to play with his hair. It gives the impression of flying, as though he's sitting on the back of a dragon or so. It's so dynamic.
You're welcome! It's great you found your love for acrylics. I've always admire you for trying out new things every once in a while.

AloiInTheSky In reply to gdpr-20773443 [2017-02-04 19:26:18 +0000 UTC]

I love that too~ Like we can feel the wind on his cheeks ^^
Well I doubt he would willingly sit on the back of a dragon, he's not so much a dragons' friend (at least my Thranduil isn't - But 's Thranduil can be convinced ^^ )

What I especially loved with acrylics was the sensation when painting the face, the texture of the skin. It felt so real, with an intensity of presence, a kind of density, that I've never encountered before (watercolour and coloured pencils are so soft media).
It felt like applying cream on his skin ^^ A very interesting sensation

It was the dynamic in particular that made me like the picture in an instant. This hint on movement, of wind in his hair. <3
I love mintdr 's universe and her story about the dragon in particular. It looks like her Thranduil was finally convinced by Legolas that keeping a dragon is a good idea.

I've never tried acrylics myself (I have no space where I can actually paint), but I can imagine the experience being very different from watercolours. I've once (about 15 years ago) made an oil painting at a friend's who taught me how it's done. I found it very difficult, but I kept the painting. It shows the capital of Cardassia Prime from Star Trek DS9 (I've been in my DS9 phase at that time), looks extremely amateurish, but I like it nevertheless.

I find particularly interesting that it felt like applying creme on his cheek. That must have been a very intense experience.

AloiInTheSky In reply to gdpr-20773443 [2017-02-06 19:58:51 +0000 UTC]

I love that too. And it was very pleasing to draw <3

I like 's  universe too ^^ It's very pleasing to discover her new drawings each day ^^
And of course her Thranduil had to be convinced to keep the dragon in the end ^^

My own Thranduil just can't accept anything about dragons anymore though, the pain hurts still too deeply in his flesh, in his soul. His blindness being a daily reminder of how cruel dragon fire can be... Along with the scars on his face and body..
But that's why personal universes are good for, each of them evolving somehow independently from each other, according to our own lifes, experiences, truths...

It looks great. I like how your grasped the perspective. And it looks very otherworldly ^^

Oh yes <3 And painting his hair was like brushing his real hair <3

mintdr In reply to AloiInTheSky [2017-02-08 10:10:40 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!   I am glad that you like them!
My elves are not so serious, so a flight on a dragon would be something they could do. But your Thranduil has suffered too much, so no dragon stories would ever seem nice or amusing to him...
Yes, it´s the best about personal universes. They grow and expand as we intend them to be.
I have always imagined Thranduil´s hair as very soft and silky  And maybe getting static after brushing

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AloiInTheSky In reply to mintdr [2017-02-08 19:28:46 +0000 UTC]

Yes, my Thranduil suffered fat too much, so no Dragon for him ^^

Now you've got to draw Thranduil fighting with his hair gone all static after brushing XD

mintdr In reply to AloiInTheSky [2017-02-09 09:59:49 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yes, that must be a sight! I will try! thank you for the idea! <3 I am sure he has some nice anti static spray because no way his long hair can be so smooth on its own XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AloiInTheSky In reply to mintdr [2017-02-09 10:11:24 +0000 UTC]

I had no idea anti-static spray ever existed O_o Or perhaps it's an elven thing?

Awww, thank you! I am really happy that you like my elven universe!  These elves have become a part of my daily life now and made me return to drawing after a really long break. I hadn´t drawn anything since I was a teen but then came the Hobbit (yeees, just the elvenking, not exactly the movie ) and I couldn´t help it, I had to draw him
And little Smaug has won my heart, now he appears regularly in my doodles
Would you show us your painting please? I am sure AloiInTheSky will support me here It would be really nice to see it!

Anytime! Your drawings are among the real highlights on my watchlist every day.
It's great the Elves awoke the joy of drawing in you after such a long time. I totally like your elves in their everyday situations. And little Smaug has a place in my heart, too.

Here's the painting: 20170206 141621
It's far from being a masterpiece, but I like it nevertheless. I particularly like the sky.

It makes me really happy to know it!   And little Smaug is just too cute, nobody can resist his charm
Your painting is beautiful. It gives such ethereal feeling! I love how the colors are blending in the sky, a sunset! And all these spires on the buildings and how they seem to gradually disappear in the distance and the misty horizon. I would love to get there, it´s like seeing something for the first time and suddenly realizing that you have missed it. Please do paint again!

Looks like there are many more episodes of 'A real dragon' then!
It's true, nobody can resist the charm of a little dragon. It's impossible to resist that amount of cuteness.

Thank you. It's been a beginners work. I've never painted anything after that. My friend had a room in her house that she used for painting - that's where this picture came into existence. I don't have any space for this hobby at home, sadly. So if I ever get famous, that thing might be worth a million.
This is the picture I used as a reference: vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/m…
Back then I was obsessed with Star Trek Deep Space 9. Cardassia Prime is one of the planets where the story took place.
I'm really happy that you like the painting although it's so amateurish. I like too, that's why I'm still keeping it.

Yes, there are so many dragon sketches and they keep appearing. I really need to color them Dragons are cute
You are welcome! It´s a wonderful work, especially for a beginner. It doesn´t look a beginner´s painting I think, it is really good! Yes, these space issues... It´s the pretty much same here. Yesterday I got a little aluminium easel, but I still haven´t figured out where to put it and how to deal with possible paint splashes
Yes, one day this painting will be very valuable! It already is, since it is a great souvenir!
I haven´t watched the Star Trek, but I really like how this planet looks. In fact I prefer your painting, not the reference picture, your version seems much more real!
