So much for that urban legend!
The idea of Lyra obsessed with becoming a human is cute, but gets old after a while. And it's all because she sat down upright on a park bench early in the series. She sits upright like we do for the very reason you so beautifully illustrated--that's how you play the harp, as well as the lyre. I also entertain this cute idea that Lyra really does use her hooves to pluck the strings on her lyre, but is nimble with hooves as we are with fingers. She uses magic for more difficult arrangements along with her hooves.

Lyra isn't a harpist... Lyra is a A lyrist.. because she plays the Lyre... not the harp .. I dunno why I have to keep pointing it out to people...
As someone who plays the Lyre... It's not .. Pfft same deal... Lyres have a unique sound, closer to the Zyther or mandalin then the harp.... thats the point.. if a lyre was a small harp then there would be no point.. .. That being said.... Great picture, the art is really nice...

The smaller a harp gets the "twangier" the sound gets. I have a lap harp and the sound of the notes are very different from my prelude lever harp. And when I mess with my teacher's pedal harp the notes are even richer. It all has to do with the sound-board and because a lyre's is very different, the note quality/sound is obviously different. But they are very similar in general function/form and how they acoustically work.
Also, if a lyre was just smaller harp there would still be a point for it. There are various sizes of harps and they all have their purpose. And think of a viola, a viola is functionally a bigger violin and it has its purpose.
I am a harpist and as such I thought this would be an amusing way to explain why she sits the way she does. My younger sister made a good point about her name and how people imply that she plays the lyre because of it. "Lyra" is the fan given name, "Heartstrings" was the official one, which is a lot more generic. I think most of the cutie marks are actually pretty ambiguous. Like Octavia's; I find her's to be one of the most ironic. Her cutie mark is a g-clef yet she plays a cello, which plays in the bass-clef.
I understand that a lyre and a harp aren't the same, trust me. But being an animator as well, I can understand why the would draw a lyre on her flank instead of a harp. Harps are pains in the butt to draw because they are so big and complex.
I personally think that Lyra's gift is precision magic and a love for music. This gives her the ability to pluck multiple strings at the same time as well as strum(as would be the case with the lyre) with her magic. With that theory of mine she could easily play both the harp and the lyre as well as other string instruments like a zither, kora, etc.
In reality she's a cute pony that we've never seen do anything significant and has only had a couple of lines throughout the whole show. So it's all just speculation :/

It is very much true that she was called heartstrings... ... but now Lyra's official name is Lyra Heartstings, said hasbro/ hub...
And her cutiemark is labelled as a Lyre.... I think depicting a harp is fine, but it really is a Lyre... and thats why I love her as a character.... cause she plays the same instrument as I do
im not really that fussy.... but I like her to be depicted as a Lyrist not a harpist... cause she isn't a harpist.

Take a look at the harpist in the Grand Galloping Gala
They have the exact same cutie mark, and are a harpist
See, and I love her because I see her playing the harp because that's the instrument I play, so I totally understand

There was a harpist with the same cutie mark at the Grand Galloping Gala, though.

I have a lever too
A pedal would be nice, but I don't see that anywhere in the near future for me
