Description Chapter 4: Enemies at the gate

Gunfire echoed around a vast warehouse located a Tobacco Dock, a dock operated solely by the underground movement.  Colin Grayson, a former steelworker from Port Talbot steelworks, whom migrated to support the underground movement, took shelter behind a set of metal crates close to the entrance to the tunnel leading to the Underground. Armed with an Uzi Carbine, he managed to take out several opposition guards, armed with the standard army edition M4 Carbine. However, his small workforce, armed with a selection of Uzi handguns, SMG's and Carbines, was rapidly being overwhelmed by the endless soldiers and sniper support on nearby rooftops. His team started with 25 people but by now it had been reduced to merely a handful, and Grayson was becoming increasingly aware that death was inevitable. Despite this, Grayson knew that the supplies must either be moved to a more secure location or destroyed, preferably the latter. Suddenly at that moment, a large glass window to the right of him was shattered by a single sniper round that collided with the crates literally centimetres from his head. Taking a deep breath, he spoke calmly down the radio "Command this is docks over, requesting urgent assistance over, my team is being massacred over, I need help now over and out". Then a familiar voice echoed down the radio "Docks this is base 27 over, support is on its way over, or to be precise, he is on his way, over and out!" Collin, somehow more confident of success, reloaded his carbine with a new magazine, turned to the open window and muttered to himself "Time to blow your bloody head off!!!"

Max glanced down a dimly lit and dusty tunnel, which smelt earthy. For the first time since getting involved with the Underground, Max began to harbour reservations of being in the underground movement, and furthermore, he realised for the first time that his life was in danger.  As Max walked down what seemed an endless cycle of tunnels, each tunnel threw up memories of his childhood, including when Max was 6yrs old and his Dad taught him how to ride a bike, albeit with stabilisers. Another memory resurfaced, this time Max's first day at school, with his parents waving him through the front gates of Southfields Community College. Max hated his time at the college, and was regularly bullied, both physically and psychologically.  The main "bully" was a man called Martin Croft, who stood at over 6ft, whom was also stout and a keen rugby player, all of which made him a terrifying foe. Perhaps Max's proudest moment at school was during a physical education, or PE lesson, when during a game of rugby, when bravely decided to rugby tackle Martin to get the ball, but what resulted was anything but clean. Max had ran into Martin at such speed that the giant fell back over his ankle, breaking it. Clearly Martin's huge figure proved to be his Achilles heel.
Max further remembered how he had met his one good friend at the college, David White, a keen motorcyclist and talented intellectual. In fact, he was so intelligent he was offered a scholarship from Oxford University to read physics. Sadly, Max had lost contact with David, whom continuously got Max out of scrapes with the bullies. The last Max had heard of David he was set to embark on a two year secondment to NASA in America. Max longed for David to be next to him to offer him the confidence to do the deed he was about to commit. In fact, David's most useful gift to max was confidence, which the fairly tall (just under six foot), blond haired lad oozed.
As max continued to walk through the dimly lit, dusty tunnels, his nerves started to rapidly grow, to the level he had not experienced since he passed his practical test just over 3 years over, something which his Dad spent ages preparing him for in his Mercedes-Benz W211, a car he had just replaced with a new Mercedes-Benz CLS for just over £50,000. The final words of advice his Dad gave him were that he is the best driver on the road and that the others are idiots. Amazingly, Max passed with just 3 minors. Max's nervous nature meant that he wasn't much of a boy racer, but he had had his fair share of crashes, including one with a Mini Cooper which wrote off the Mercedes-Benz W211 his Dad had given him as a well done present for passing his practical and theory exams. Max always had a good relationship with his Dad, although in the last couple of years they had started to drift apart. Max was always annoyed with his Mother as she acted like a teacher 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It was like living with a police officer when she was about, everything was run like clockwork and punishments were never looked over.

The more these memories appeared to Max the more he missed them and the more depressed he became. One image however stuck in his mind, the bloodied and mutilated remains of his parents, an image he constantly tried to erase from his mind, but like a bad memory, it just would not go away. Max continued to walk through the endless dusty, dimly lit tunnels, which now smelt stagnant and tasted of dust. Every so often he would come across large spider webs, which didn't bother Max as he had always been interested in nature, and also mice / rat holes, with the occasional mouse racing away from him.

Max's mind switched from his parents to Gareth, to whom Max now knew what he must have been going through before his death, to which Max started harbouring feeling of guilt, that he didn't do more to protect and help Gareth. Max wished he could say sorry to Gavin for not being more sympathetic, but he knew this was impossible. Max however had grown more determined than ever before to avenge the deaths of Maria and Keith Carter, Gavin Roberts and his parents by killing Mr Jones and freeing the people who were being strangled by his dictatorship. Max's mind drifted to what Alan said to him moments before he left the control room "Max, you are far more important then you could ever imagine, and as a result Mr Jones will be after you..." Max wondered if he could draw Mr Jones into the open then pump him full of lead, but he realised that Mr Jones had many henchman and assistants whom would kill him instead. Max wondered whether this was why Alan begged him to join the Underground, and whether his presence in the Underground was endangering their lives.
Suddenly Max's attention was brought to a large wooden (probably ash) doorway which had been wired. Max walked closer and saw the fuse wire and lighter hidden under a rock nearby. Max walked a few steps forward and grabbed the lighter, made of plastic with a bright green colour and translucent, it was full of lighter fluid. Max flicked the lighter and got a flame from it, Max knew how to use one because there's was one in his kitchen draw which was used for cooking. Max turned around and saw a large amount of what looked like plastic explosive (Max had watched a lot of action films!) moulded behind the doorway and realised that blowing the door frame would cause a huge explosion. Max put the lighter in his pocket and kept walking, knowing that time was short.
About 50 yards later Max could hear the unforgettable sound of gunshots and he could also smell the bullets, which smelt of burning metal, and he could also taste a lot of dust which the bullets were kicking up. Max kept walking and then he saw a light around a corner, which Max guessed was the door to the warehouse. Max rounded the corner and kept walking, into the unknown...
