And neither do I, original Simba. Neither do I.Inspired after finally getting a closer look at Simba's appearance in The Lion Guard, I made this as sort of an expression for how I feel towards his apparent redesign in the show. To put it simply, I don't know what the hell happened. In the first promo image we saw of him, Simba actually looked pretty good. (Which you can see here):

I didn't realistically expect them to use his TLKII look, so he looked fine for what I did expect. But then some time later, we got this screenshot from the TV movie:

And then we got the most recent TV spot for it as well, where we see Simba more clearly in motion:

I just don't know what happened, he looks completely different between the first two pictures. I know lots of people like to say that Simba looks like crap in The Lion King II, and that his design looks off-model there. But this is almost a completely different ballpark than that case. From what I see, Simba's cheeks are way too wide (making him look fatter than ever), his snout/muzzle is too thin, his eyes look too large, and the upper part of his mane is far smaller than it should be. I don't know how or why he looks anything like this in the show.
My only guess is that they tried to make Simba look "cuter" to better appeal to The Lion Guard's younger intended audience. But what confuses me there is that, while Simba appears off-model, Nala and Kiara both look just fine. Nala looks all right, albeit a tad thicker in the muzzle, and Kiara looks damn near spot-on. So why such a radical change to Simba?
And just to make this clear while I can: No, this is not "Lion Guard hate art" in case any hypersensitive Tumblr people see this and take it out of context. I'm still extremely excited about The Lion Guard, fully intend to see it, and am going into it with completely open mind. I still have lot of hope that it can be really good. But even with that, I genuinely can't say I agree with Simba's new design in the show. I don't know, maybe it'll grow on me one of these days. Who knows? But until it does, I'm going to have a lot of fun making fun of the design as mercilessly as I can.

I think Lion Guard's character design style is similar to Jake and the Neverland Pirates. Simba's body is very short. His face is quite childish. The worst thing is his feet. They are like erasers. It's even worse when he's moving.

While I'll admit that Simba's Lion Guard design looks weird, I'll never understand why people hated his Simba's Pride design. I'm guessing it has something to do with his colors. I was never really affected by the colors of that movie. Sure the colors looked radically different from the first movie, but I was never fazed by the colors in the second movie. I'm sure if people saw past the different color design, they'd actually think that Simba aged nicely since the first movie and actually looks really good.

The general color scheme of Simba's Pride is... questionable at best, but Simba still looks like his old self in it. Still with The Lion Guard could've done the same.

The weather seems somewhat plausible color-wise, but it's Simba's physical look in The Lion Guard that I still kind of question. Oh well. And nice choice of song! Just when I managed to get it out of my head, too... XD

TBH I like both Simbas, I just hate the Simba from the second lion king. Just my opinion.

That's fine, nothing wrong with that. I just kind of thing Simba from the second movie gets too much of a bum rep, I don't personally see why so many people have that much of an issue with his design there.

Well, maybe its like Transformers: Rescue Robots with Optimus Prime. In PRIme, he is nearly identical to the movie Prime. In RB, he looks like armada. Right?

I have waaaaay too much stuff on my plate too worry about right now that hashing it out over details on a children's cartoon that I am so totally going to watch even if I'm 7 times older than the target audience...

Understandible. I know Kion is the main focus of the show and not Simba, so I see where you're coming from. I can't say I'm necessarily angry over the new look myself, this drawing was mostly done to make light fun of it. I'm more annoyed than I am mad, really. Still, I think it's a hell of a lot of fun to mock the new look in this way.

Color wise I still prefer him over SP simba... for now. So far, Promo's and art work (like the art book) have better depictions of Simba VS the animation. I don't believe Simba will even be in it much after the Movie special so I'm not overly torn up about it. Could be worse... he could be even more off looking like Fuli.

I look forward to getting that book once I see Return of the Roar, so I have hope that Simba would look a little better there. Good to hear that he likely does. 
It took me a while to get used to Fuli's design, but I can say I'm used to it by now. She looks okay. Not great, but not horrible either. Her look I can live with, although I can definitely see and understand why it's getting the criticism it is. (I can at least agree that she looks WAY too thin.)

I got it and really, there aren't any spoilers in it that we haven't already seen in the trailers, so if you don't want to wait, you can go ahead and get it. I was hoping for some additional goodies but I suppose I better wait until later XD I will say Simba looks almost 100% like his old self except the occasional mane looking a little too much like Mufasa's in some scenes. That, and for some reason they had a hard time with Timon and Pumba's design! It comes out of nowhere honestly lol

In that case, I might just get the book sooner now. The less I know about Return of the Roar's plot before seeing it, the better. As for Timon and Pumbaa, they look all right to me. Timon looks a little off, but I can forgive his look since it's nothing too major. Personally, I'm more interested in how/why they managed to adopt Bunga as a "son".

yeah none of that is in there, so you're good to go. Literally everything we've seen, be it from the producers or from trailers... it's in the book. I can't think of a single thing that spoils anything. In fact, I wish there were more details XD Oh! We do learn that Mzingo is the vulture and not a hyena, but it was like "Mzingo flies to Janja in the outlands."

I have no qualms with how Simba looked in the Timon and Pumbaa show -- though, in regards to seriousness, Lion Guard wins it ten-fold. ... But yeah ... it *is* strange that Simba is the only one that gets this radical change from the original: he looked different in SP, was fine in T&P show, and now LG. It's the eyebrows. If they would've thinned them out, he would look a lot better than he does.

The eyebrows definitely stuck out to me as well. But personally, it's the enlarged cheeks and the thinned out muzzle that are bothering me the most. Hell, when I was drawing this, it almost felt like I was drawing a completely different character entirely when I got to his TLG look.
