Description UPDATE:  It's almost finished (and it looks great)!  I know, it has taken so much longer than expected ... I've got about six more hours of work on it.  Unfortunately, it's the end of the semester and so I've got some finals to wrap up before I can wrap this up.

Underdrawing for an 8x10" watercolor illustration of a seventeenth century Scottish murder ballad called "The Cruel Sister" (also known as "The Twa Sisters"). I am wildly excited about painting this one soon, though I'm not thrilled with the composition.

There are countless versions of the song (at least 21 English versions and at least 125 Swedish versions, according to Wikipedia), but this is the one that inspired me:

There lived a lady by the North Sea shore
(Lay the bent tae the bonnie broom)
Twa daughters were the bairns she bore
(Fa la la la la la la la la la)

One was as bright as is the sun
Sae coal black grew the elder one

A knight came riding to the ladies' door
He travelled far to be their wooer

He courted one, aye with gloves and rings
But he loved the other above all things

Sister, sister, won't you walk with me
An' see the ships sail upon the sea?

And as they stood on that windy shore
The elder sister pushed the younger o'er

Sometimes she sank or sometimes she swam
Crying "Sister, reach to me your hand"

And there she floated just like a swan
The salt sea carried her body on

Two minstrels walking by the North Sea strand
They saw the maiden, aye float to land

They made a harp out of her breastbone
The sound of which would melt a heart of stone

They took three locks of her yellow hair
And wi' them strung that harp so rare

The first string that those minstrels tried
Then terror seized the black-haired bride

The second string played a doleful sound
"The younger sister, oh she is drowned"

The third string, it played beneath their bow
"And surely now, her tears will flow"

Emily Smith's version is quite different but very beautiful:

My favorite version is by Loreena Mckennitt. It's called The Bonny Swans. I drew a bunch of doodles inspired by the story (no where near as good as your work though ).

Thanks so much, I'm glad you like it!

I've heard Loreena Mckennitt's version!  I don't like her style quite as much, personally, though it is very beautiful.

This is beautiful, I love the dynamic storytelling here, and the detailed linework is fantastic. It makes me think of Arthur Rackham's work

That's lovely!  It's so similar to the Old Blind Dogs arrangement, though it fills in some of the details of the story that are missing in their newer version.  I had heard they arranged it themselves, but clearly they didn't.  Thanks for sharing

Welcome!  I first heard the Pentangle version in 1972 ...that was a time when English/Irish/Scottish traditional music was making a comeback.

I love all versions of this story, and it's very well illustrated. (I'm more familiar with the Bonny Swans, but that's a digression)

oh cool  her songs are a little too ephemeral for me.  I love that she turned The Highwayman into a song though.  I'd like to paint that someday

I guess it really is sort of mood music. I first started listening to her via a friend, with Penelope's song, because the Odyssey was something I had a lot of love for.

And the highwayman is a lovely piece, I'll love to see what you come up with!

I love the Odyssey, I'll have to check out Penelope's song!

I'm excited that you're excited to see a Highwayman illustration  I was thinking about how I'd compose it and didn't come up with anything great.  Eventually though ...

I don't know how well it would work as one illustration, maybe a series of small ones all put together?

Your art always reminds me of stained glass windows.

yeah, I was thinking a diptych originally.  several small illustrations is a good idea!  I will think about it.

Thanks

Thanks!  I knew a couple traditional stories about two sisters, one good and one evil, but I only heard the song for the first time this summer.  It was a good find
