Winter Queen

Following my recent expedition in Antarctica, I've been looking for an opportunity to somehow incorporate some of the amazing scenery into my work back here in Halifax, but I wasn't confident that my photoshop skills were up to the task. Still, I hoped to give it a try at some point.

When Natalie Swift let me know she was soon to be moving to Hawaii (jealous!), I knew I wanted to get her into the studio before she left, so we rushed her in for a shoot.

Normally we pre-plan concepts, but in Natalie's case, we kind of flew by the seats of our collective pants. We did three or four wildly different looks, and sometime during the night, I tossed out the idea of doing something with the really wonderful vintage jewelry she'd brought along. My idea was to use one of the broaches as the star, and overlay this image from Antarctica. I thought we could work a turban type looks.

From that, Mallory took the idea and absolutely knocked it out of the postal code. When Natalie came out of makeup and wardrobe, I was blown away. And Mallory routinely impresses me, but this was downright crazy good. Nat fit the mystic look I wanted a well, with her eyes just mesmerizing.

Anyway, this my attempt to merge some of the magic of my trip to Antarctica with an ethereal image crafted by Mallory and Natalie.

I should also mention that I was fortunate enough to have an intern along for this fun night. Melanie Titus is a first year student at NSCC, and she contributed great help to the process of setting up the lighting for this shot.
