Aquilegia flabellata var. pumila, also known as Aquilegia akitensis or Japanese Dwarf Fan Columbine, is an amazing dwarf variety of columbine. In the picture, you can see almost all parts of the plants that can be seen above the soil surface: contrastly blue and white flowers of the same size as for a usual columbine but on stems only 10-15 cm / 4-6" tall emerging from a carpet of leaves that is 5-7 cm / 2-3" high. A lovely species for special places in the garden!

They are beautiful flowers. I like the common name these have "Japanese Dwarf Fans" as they DO kind of remind you of something exotic & delicate.
I always have a few garden varieties growing in the yard & harvest the seeds in the fall (otherwise they take over the yard). LOL
