Description Orchis is the orchid genus that gave its name to the whole family, Orchidaceae. The term "Orchis" derives from the Greek όρχις, meaning "testicle", and refers to the appearance of the two subterranean tubers (in German, Orchis is called Knabenkraut, meaning "Boy Herb").

Orchis species are native to Europe and parts of Asia and Northern Africa. Some species feature rather peculiar flowers that look like little monkeys, with "arms" and "legs" and a "tail", as well, for example Orchis simia (the Monkey Orchid) and Orchis italica - the one in this picture.

Full size view, please, and have a closer look - then you can see those little faces!

Wow, sehr interessante und kraftvolle Blüte.
Manche Teile erinnern mich an Gesichter (Männchen) und manche an Frösche.

Thank you very much!

I took this shot with my Tamron lens with a focus of 270 mm. The distance to the flowers was about 50 cm.

Do you mean the pictures or the orchids, Edie?

the orchids.....never seen them so bunched together. One of my orchids had dropped all its flowers and 9 blooms left on the other one. Are they hard to grow back?

Oh, many of the wild orchids in Europe (and in North America as well) look similar to this Orchis.

Hm, for many orchids species, it's really kinda problem to get new flowers, for others, however, it is not - it depends on the variety of orchid you grow.

Well, if a Phal is in an ideal condition, it'll be blooming almost all the year long, with only two or three months without flowers.

You could also imagine it being a creature of the coral reef!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Althytrion In reply to AlecBell [2011-09-25 18:53:26 +0000 UTC]

Yes, indeed! There's also a very special link between them and old coral reefs, since on Crete and elsewhere in the Mediterranean region, they use to grow in masses on limestone soils, which once have been a coral reef, millions of years ago.

Thank you very much, Alec!
