“We had such good times, how could you forget them so easily?”

“...Yes...”

“...What’s wrong?”

“It’s...It’s nothing, really...”

_____’s eyes bore into mine, showing signs of doubt. I honestly wish I were better at lying.

“You can tell me, I don’t mind.” She encouraged, turning my direction more.

“...Not exactly.”

“Why not?”

’you wouldn’t understand, you can’t even remember who I am anymore.’

“...”

Her expression saddened. I knew it wasn’t her fault. None of this was. But it still hurt.

“...Ki...Kiku? That was your name?” She inquired, trying to remember what I’d reminded her of earlier. I nodded in agreement. Yes, that was my name. She used to know it so well.

“Kiku, I’m trying my best to be friendly with you, but you keep pushing me away. Do you not want to be friends?”

Her question surprised me. Of course I did. I wanted her to remember me again. I wanted things the way they were before she lost her memories of me. It was so difficult to speak to her though, knowing that through her eyes I was simply another stranger.

“...I’m sorry Kiku...” Her voice brought me back to the present. “I realize I must be weird, talking to you like we’re buddies and stuff. I’m just friendly, that's all, i didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable or upset.”

I had to say something! Why couldn’t I do anything? I didn’t like hearing her like this, I never have!

She was still looking at me, as though expecting me to say something. I wanted to, I really did.

She’ll end up leaving for good at this rate.

I watched her stand up from the corner of my eye.

’please don’t go...’

“Sorry, I’ll just...I’ll leave...sorry about all that...” She spoke in a tone of unease.

’Please don’t leave me again...’

The leaves on the ground crunched beneath her feet as she walked away from me. I could still feel the tension drifting in the air. She was still the same person I’d always known, yet she was so different now. She was a stranger in the body of my old friend.

Her memory would never come back though, the doctors had already confirmed it.

But, I still wish that....maybe a miracle will happen. if she was meant to be with me, fate would bring us together again.

but it had already ripped up apart. It could easily do it again.

I rested my head on my knees, closing my eyes and remembering the past. I missed her more than anything. I missed her being so close to me, recognizing my face with a smile. I wanted to be back in the days where she knew my name just as well as her own.

These memories would haunt me forever though. Things could never be the same again. it took a lifetime just to be with her in the first place. The process was snatched from me so easily though.

A lifetime taken away in a split second.

I knew carrying memories of us she herself had lost would only bring me pain, but it was so tempting to just go back to the time in which she would hold onto me and promise to never let me go.

I only wish I could hear her say those words once more, the words I always took for granted...
