Linnea ate her breakfast in silence, totally absorbed in her thoughts about her brother's mental breakdown the day before yesterday.
A dead cicada.
Sis...
Blood on it.
I...
Blood on his fist.
IKILLEDMOM!
Sobbing.
I-I...
She sighs.
Today is the day. Today they'll leave this little, rural village for good.
Auli better be ready for it.

Beard's chucking wood. That's his job. He's an unofficial woodchucker to those villagers, who're too old or injured to do it themselves. He's chucking wood.
And then, amongst the trees, he sees a frosty-blond head moving towards him.
Linnea tells him they're leaving. They have to find the western-side road that leads to a city. Beard must help.
So he does.
He leads them to a road, the one that should lead to their destination.
- Be careful there, big cities 'r' dangerous.
She nods, gray eyes serious.
- An' I think it's gonna rain soon.
Nod.
A small silence.
- Well then...
She nods.
- Goodbye, Mr. Beard.
He's silent, they turn around and start following the road to their new destiation.
They're already away when he whispers his farewells.

It's raining.
She's standing under a tree, he's running around, getting himself soaked to the bone. He's laughing - oh how she had missed that sound! - but she knows better.
She knows it's fake.
He's not fine.
