SECTION 3 / PERSONALITY
+ kind / + hospitable / + calm
= air-headed / = careless / = sarcastic
- stubborn / - over-emotional / - self-depreciating
makoto, despite being over-emotional and stubborn, is generally rather nice to be around, as he spends most of his time tending to his plants or brushing up on his flower language studies, either humming quietly to himself or completely silent. He has a very calming presence, and is very welcoming and hospitable, even towards those he doesn't know, which he has obviously been warned against, being told his carelessness will one day find him in a ditch somewhere. being air-headed as he is, makoto can often be seen off with the fairies, but even if you bug him mid-daydream, he probably won't be mad, too busy being kind instead to worry about his fantasy greenhouse that he'll probably wind up in again later. as kind as he is, he always has a choice sarcastic remark on hand, the undertones of which are often a bit self-depreciating, something his parents have told him will never land him a date.

SECTION 4 / BIOGRAPHY
makoto was born in osaka, japan, and began life as any other japanese child. however, when he was 5, his father's job saw him placed in an advertising firm in los angeles, america. his parents were initially torn as to whether or not to go, and concerned about what effects the move may have on makoto's future. however, the eventually decided that the offer was too good to pass up, and set about purchasing a new house in california.
upon arriving at his new school in los angeles, makoto instantly felt a little bit different. he had barely enough knowledge of japanese, let alone this whole new series of forein sounds he'd never heard before in his young life. he had a lot of trouble fitting in, and even when his parents attempted to bring up the issue with his teachers, the language barrier was still far too difficult to breach.
it was a year or so after his arrival that makoto met kang jihyun, a young korean boy whose parents had immigrated to america for similar reasons to his own. he and jihyun became quick friends, finding comfort in their mutual lack of english skills, despite the fact that they could barely understand each other. the two boys had so much fun just being in each other's company that they didn't really feel the need to make any other friends at first. this required them to overcome the language barrier that separated them, and as a result, their english improved rapidly.
by age 13, both boys were involved in a large group of friends, and able to converse in english as fluently as any native speaker, and after joining the botany club on a whim, makoto began developing his love for plants. makoto was fitting in extremely well at this point, and his parents were happy that their somewhat introverted son was enjoying himself after so long of not having the language capabilities to do so. however, as makoto's father recieved a certain email from his boss, their happiness faded slightly. his father had been offered an executive position in the company's main branch in toronto, canada. it was an opportunity he couldn't possibly pass up, but it also meant tearing makoto away from the life he had to happily built for himself.
makoto, in his gentle nature, was actually quite understanding. he was sad, of course, but he would never want to deny his father his dream job (or free healthcare). so, over the course of a month, makoto went around all his friends, collecting contacts and well wishes, until it was finally time to go. when they arrived in toronto, it was completely different to when they had first set foot in los angeles — this time, he could speak the language, and sound at least somewhat confident doing it.
since then, makoto has graduated high school, and is currently in college and majoring in botany. he's maintained contact with a lot of his friends from los angeles, and has made many more in toronto. in addition, he recently picked up a part-time job at a local florist, where he can gush about flowers to his heart's content.
