Photoref of Miyazaki filched from somewhere I forgot. This project's been put off too long.

Some may remember the earlier composition sketch I have in my scraps. For Illo I, my final project/assignment is a colour pencil work done in between A1 to A2 in size. So, being the bloody persistent procrastinator that I am, I didn't work on a new concept until way after the deadline to show composition thumbs. Desperately, I salvaged this stalled project and did a few variations and showed it to my lecturer. He approved of this one so now I'm cooking up a colour thumb to show to him tommorow before I start execution.

Ideas flow better using pencil. I went through several individual sketches before coming up with this composition (as noted in the older scrap ). But when it comes to colour thumbs, I'm just too plain lazy and too darned stingy to use my markers or colour pencils.

Critiques most appreciated. Give it your best.
Sketch done in openCanvas3, colours in oC2.

Hayao Miyazaki's alter ego/persona was said to be a pig... which is why many of his movies had pigs in 'em.

As for why it is angry, well I thought it looked like a nice counter to Miyazaki's blank expression. No particular reason other than that.

I can't even begin to express how much I enjoy his movies. Whenever I watch one of them It makes me so proud to be half-japanese. I grew up with his movies, and I will never forget them.

Despite the very unfinished state of this drawing I'm amazed at the constant amount of faves and comments I get for it. Maybe I should actually finish it one of these days

It's really hard to be an advanced critique to such an amazing picture, especially seeing as it's Ghibli!I guess the only thing I can say is that the pig isn't really Miyazaki's art style, but even that's really good. Hmmm... I have no idea on what to say. I think the drawing of Miyazaki is the best... He's so cool!

Wow, even Miyazaki himself would be flattered by this pic!
Well done!

wow, I really feel in trouble now for not being able to think of a single thing to critique here and therefore not being able to give back nearly half as much help as you provide to me :\

I wonder from what ghibli movies the characters are.... the only ones I recongize are kiki, totoro and the kids and chihiro with Haku. Err, and Miyazaki (what's the pig supposed to be? XD)

The pig is Miyazaki's alter ego. Or so I read. He likes to portray himself as a pig in his drawings, slaving his piglet animators to work to death.

The pilot of the plane is Porco Rosso. A pig. Miyazaki loves planes (and pigs). The name Ghiblie cam from an old Italian scout plane which took the name from Qibli, an arabic name for Sirocco which is a strong southerly to southeasterly wind in the Mediterranean that originates from the Sahara and similar North African regions. The castle in the background is Laputa.

I may add Baron (the cat) and some characters from Laputa as well later on.

Aye, thanks for the info.

I had that notion about the pig portraiying miyazaki, but I wasn't sure. I AM sure though that he loves pigs!
I remember the pigs in Mononoke (I loved them!), the first Miyazaki movie I watched, and then the ones in Sen to Chihiro. I actually wonder that I didn't see any pigs in howl's moving castle, seeing he massively changed the plot of the novel it's based on. He could've put some cameo pigs in there too if he wanted XD
And yes, that's the only three Miyazaki Movies I watched so far ;_;"

hm, what I find interesting is that Pigs don't seem to have that bad reputation in asia as in europe or america. Here they are mainly there for their meat and leather, but other than that there's quite a negative image of them in many european heads. People who are unhygienic are called pigs, filthy places are called pigsties, immoral things are called pig-stuff, and the word pig is one of the most popular and 'harmless/normal' insults in german :\ so I guess the pig would be one of the last animals someone would identify with here.
So I kinda feel bad for pigs xD;

Heheheh, it's still the same here. My lecturer said I should be careful after I graduate and work in the industry so as to not use pigs prominently in my works (quite the controversial animal in an Islamic country). Basically, everyone sees 'em as unhygienic, no exception. It seems to me it's only the Japanese and probably the Chinese who are very enthusiastic with the idea of keeping pigs as pets (as evidently portrayed in some Mangas).

Oh yeah, I forgot ro mention. The girl in front is Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.

ScatterbrainFox In reply to amade [2005-11-19 14:12:40 +0000 UTC]

there even was a trend here some years ago with so-called Mini-pigs as pets. They were very popular with people (even though there -is- that mentality I mentioned, you can see how easily influenced people are by trends, popularity and cuteness factors.), because the people now noticed that little piglets are actually adorable. In the end they were all fooled because they soon noticed there is no real pig race as mini-pigs. They were just smaller than normal pigs, but notby much when they'd reached the adult age.

You know, in islamic countries this mentality about the pigs being filthy makes more sense, because they don't EAT them. How much sense does it make to say "eeew pigs are gross!" and then eat them?
But well, me being fond of birds doesn't change the fact that chicken is my favourite food.

amade In reply to ScatterbrainFox [2005-11-19 14:32:40 +0000 UTC]

Nah, as a Muslim I don't eat such things. The very traditional Chinese however quite like exotic animals as delicacies. The government tries to curb this as diseases and species endangerment arises from unhygienic breeding or probihited hunting of such animals. The SARS outbreak was said to have been caused by Civet cats which were caught for consumption. Not just for consumption, but some animals are caught for purported medicinal properties.

Disneyland HK had a row over serving Shark's Fin soup in its restaurants. First they said that as a traditional delicacy, tourists would want to see it on the menu. They then backed down to taking it off the menus but still served it to anyone who wants to order it. They still took flak for it and had to finally stop serving it for good.

I'm to tired to offer a valid critique, so I'll just say that I look forward to seeing this finished. Ahh...! The wonders of Miyazaki!
