Description Constructive critique/paintovers appreciated!

This was going to be my second entry for Eraili 's umalyn raffle. It was meant to be a speedpaint, but the question as always is when to stop? Ill be honest, I struggled with this one. It was made as practice to learn backgrounds, and lighting and learning how to paint faster because wow even this took a lot longer than it was meant to. I'm uploading it as it is, because I've sort of run out of time for it, and in a way I consider it finished? It was never meant to be fully detailed.

I would really really appreciate a critique on this. I know that the back figure is as flat as can be. But wow, I struggled with shading the rather complex stripes and markings on the characters. I didn't know what are good shortcuts for speedpainting. For textures. For water, for trees, for being able to leave bits unfinished but still looking cool. For dealing with colours in new contexts! Just in general everything!

I do like the log though, I'm proud of that. And the painting looks decent as a teeeeeeennnyy tiny thumbnail. >_>

These lovely fellows belong to:
DawnDeadlyNadder  at the front (I know the colours and what are markings and uuugggggg)
Pandapalz at the back, for what its worth

Thanks for submitting to the ZealZone e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="387" title=" (Wink)"/>

I must say this is a great piece of artwork, it looks very good on first site, even tho it's just a sketch e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

The first thing that makes some impact on me are those great creatures. It looks like a felid with some awesome-colored eagle wings pasted onto it. I really like custom creatures, especially mammals, I find it always hard to let them look different.

I have got the mindset that art needs to bring forth meaning or impact and not necessarily a feeling that the artist is just great with some tools. This easily does the job, the creatures are presented in a rustic environment, not as fantasy-like as the creatures but the creatures easily add on to that. I find it becaise of the creatures this way a very good piece of art, and original too.

Well what else got I to say ... I am not good at writing critiques but I'll just mention that you got to try to make the background a little bit different?
I mean it's good this way but unless you wanna bring forth a winter landscape, maybe add some green and shrubbery? That way the background looks a little bit better.

I hope this critiques gave you some insights on what you did good and could go better, anyways really great job on this piece e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="387" title=" (Wink)"/>

You definitely did well on this for something that was a practice in backgrounds in lighting primarily, even though it took longer than it was meant to. The lighting looks very well done to me, and the background is thoughtfully laid out. It's not very often that you see scenes with thorough backgrounds, so it's kinda cool when you see them. I love the wings on the creatures. They look really cool, like stained glass or something. The only thing that I would say might need a little more work would be the tree in the right hand side of the picture. It's pretty good, but it still kind of looks a little like someone spray painted it or something. It needs a tiny bit more depth like you did with the log, which looks awesome. All in all this look really cool and I think you did an awesome job.

I must say, this leaves quite an impression despite it's simplicity. Your speedpainting skills are a good base for further development i think. It's my subjective opinion. But saddly I can't offer any constructive critique, as I never did any speedpainting. I want to learn too >.<
Maybe the back figure could use some deeper shadows...hm.

Aww thanks. I'm really trying to learn to paint a lot faster, and I think that speedpainting should help with that. I tend to get pretty stuck on areas at other times. You should try it sometime, it can definitely be an interesting working method.
You're right there, I'll remember that next time

Yeah, I know they're supposed to improve your drawing style and speed but I'm kinda intimidated by speedpaints I always tell myself that I will try someday anyway

They;re actually less intimidating than doing a whole thing! Think of them as the sketch that you'd make before you do lineart

Oh, I like the sketches of people and stuff alright, but I never liked to shade anything or making backgrounds, so maybe that's why I didn't try speedpainting yet

The blue and brown in this looks AWESOME!!! omg!!! I really like the bi-chromatic-ness of it!!  I struggle with painting complex characters too.  I either lose the markings and gradients or the shading is wonky.  No I totally feel this. I do REALLY like how that front character came out though!! And the log! THE LOG IS SO GOOD.  I am jealous of this log.  Takes the log.

AAhhhhh thank you! I never would have guessed that you struggled with complex characters though! Your shading always seems to be so exciting and good.

And no, thats my log and its the one thing I'm proud of >_>

Thanks! I could have finished the whole thing eventually after a few months.  With millions of details everywhere. But I didn't want to, but then when is it finished? XD

I feel you, I also don't always know when to stop painting.

Critique, you say? Let's see..
You sure did a good job on that log, the texture is perfect.

I think the big tree at the right is demanding too much attention. If you left it more bland, less detail, I think it would have been better.

And for the colours, I'd choose one blue and use it for both characters, even if they look quite different on the reference sheet. And I'd use that same blue in the light spots of the water, too. It unifies the picture more.

I can't help you with the anatomy of those creatures, I looks fine to me. Couldn't have done it better.

Hope it helps a bit!

I understand that, it's really annoying when one part of something goes really well and the rest is just disappointing.

Thats goood, because I really need to figure out how to do shading where the character is still recognizable XD
