Well, the prime means of getting around is teleporting between locations. Destinations could either be picked from stored ones (which you have in your inventory as landmarks, via the search function -- results that are places usually offer a "teleport" button -- or by someone sending you a teleport request, which will take you to them if you agree. There are a few more variations, which, however, don't play much of a role in everyday Second Life.
