Due to old age, in his case. He's never seen the snow, sadly. We don't have it where I live.

Its just a name for the pink on the tips My aunt's puppy has it and so did my other dog. The cold of the snow makes dogs go wild!

Not really, some dogs get dis-pigmented noses only during winter and they'll go black again in summer.

I used a 75-300mm USM canon, with a macro extensor tube.

Every one of my golden boys started off with a gorgeous black nose, then by the time they are around 3 years old their little noses turn pink! Im glad Im not the only one whose pups have this lol! I wish it would go black again.

amaliabastos In reply to Aeltari [2012-04-02 16:53:39 +0000 UTC]

It's very common in the breed. I've heard that it's got to do with exposure to the sun, but my dogs are often in the sun and it doesn't seem to help their noses much.
In dog showing they actually use 'dog make up' to 'paint' the noses black, sometimes.

Aeltari In reply to amaliabastos [2012-04-03 11:07:13 +0000 UTC]

Yes thats why I dont like showing. A lot of breed silliness came out of confirmation shows, silliness that is harmful to dogs and is very hard to dissuade people from at this point.

My dogs are indoor bodies like me so it makes sense that they get pale like we do during the winter hehe.

I see where showing has gotten to an extreme, such as what's happened to german shepherds (and so many others) in the past years, but really, trimming, grooming and handling to me is just a way of having fun with my dog. Breeders just need to find a balance between perfecting a breed and spoiling it, which they have had difficulty doing up to now.

I love grooming my goldie. This winter he got a fierce case of "hairpads" and the tops of his toes were sprouting hairs. I made me laugh so much but I know they act as protection for his paws in the cold. Since its warmed up I trimmed the tops away so it looks like he HAS toes again but underneath hes still a fur fest .

Once many years ago with my first golden I saw that to make their faces look more clean for shows people trimmed off their whiskers. Little did I know that these goldies were also shown confirmation not just obedience and that the whiskers ARE vestigial organs used for sensing. Well didnt it just beat all that once Zakary was all cleaned up I let him outside he RAN like a madthing into the yard and wailed right into a tree! While my family laughed I felt simply terrible and never did THAT again! Of course he would have ran into the tree regardless, he was like that when all worked up but still

Hehe, here in Rio it's hot all year long so trimming off these hairs is actually a good prevention against mould and fungi growing in the dog's feet due to the damp climate.
I trim my dog's whiskers off and they never showed any problem with that. As you said, they're vestigial organs, meaning they aren't actually used by the animals much anymore. It's quite alright to trim them off, it doesn't really alter their perception of space.
Your story reminds me of the time my younger golden, Avalon, went running out of the building but didn't notice the glass door... Ouch. We all laughed at the time but then I was really worried he might have hurt his head. Nothing happened, though, except maybe for the fact that he learned never to run in that direction again.

LOL well dont feel bad both my father AND stepmother, at a shopping mall, walked into a glass door at the same time thinking it was open. They have good cleaners I guess. I agree about fungus and mold when its summer I like to keep those hairs to a minimum. good part about where we live is the ocean is salty and keeps bacteria away, just have to watch for dry skin problems.

My mother did the same once.
I live nearer to a forest so it gets pretty humid all year long, no salty water anywhere near me. :/
