First of all, your not failing.
The only way to get better is by getting way out of your comfort zone. That's one of the reasons I love taking free requests. I'm not saying you have to get the weirdest most complicated character ever, but maybe try that one pose that you've always been scared to draw or that one character you've never drawn because you can't get that one thing right. Keep going out of your comfort zone and you'll start to see progress after awhile, and it makes the easy things a little better too.
