10x10" Illo sketchbook ~ Watercolor pencils + colored pencils ~ Acrylic marker

Study of a blue Morpho butterfly done with watercolor pencils and colored pencils layered on top. This was a class project and it was so fun! I loved trying to get that iridescent look on the wings. Another thing I realized is that butterflies aren't perfectly symmetrical! I was always intimidated at the thought of drawing a realistic butterfly because I was afraid of messing up on symmetry. It was so freeing to notice otherwise upon close inspection of the reference photo. It's so amazing how art makes you look at what is, instead of what you think you see.
