Uh oh, what's going on here?!

Perch prefer the back of a bay or brackish waters, especially a cove or oxbow of an river after a spawn.

Nevora shaded her eyes from the sun peaking over the eastern trees with one purple-marked hand. She eyed the heavy pink blossoms already curling up towards the warmth that chased off the chill of night with its light. Nevora was not concerned by the change over of daytime, though.

She was watching the fog.

Wispy grey tendrils curled over the water. As she waited, they were chased to the edges of the estuary, cowering in the shelter of trees.

Nevora pulled honeyed toast from her pack and nibbled, curling her tongue to catch crumbs.

The higher the sun rose, the more the fog dissipated until eventually none was left, not even in the shelter of a log by the edge of the water.

“It’s a bit late in the season for perch,” the villagers had told her. “You’re more likely to catch bass, snook, herring, or maybe goldfish depending on where in the estuaries you go.”

“If you find any lost centaur kids, don’t bring them here,” another one had said. “We still have too many mouths to feed this early in the year.”

Nevora pressed her lips together in disapproval remembering the last. While she understood, she still believed it was cruel.

Seeing no signs of the mysterious black fog - mist - whatever from recent weather reports, she started mentally reviewing for the task at hand.

First secure the hand line. Cinch the end loop to the left wrist tightly. Make roughly 16 inch loops across the palm and back of your hand.

She opened her pack and felt for the familiar curl of the metal horn first.

There was still no sign of the black fog, so Nevora stuffed the last of the toast in her mouth and pulled out the net.

The rukaan ancestral lands were a wonder to behold, but Amranzi was so bored.

She crept between the trees, glancing over her shoulder every few yards for her overprotective guardians who she had left snoozing in the shade of dawn.

Her core herd kept mostly to themselves while here. Her mother and father were welcome most places, even the galaxy Jormungungar who had traveled with her mother for years drew looks of curiosity and respect. However, the two reosean unnerved many, especially Neorin. She looked practically predatory with those giant lilac wings.

Other rukaan here were glad to meet her, an early calf this year, yet others were tolerant of her. Some had come to rest, some to commune with the spirits, and yet others to train with handlers. What nomadic travelers she had encountered outside her own herd and species had been respectful of her space and, for the most part, welcomed her curiosity.

Her parents told her that she would meet their extended herd, Månekanin, Sabuno, Abel, Zelda, and others for the first time when they returned. Here it was safest for her to be born.

“Since it’s so safe,” she chatted to herself. “it should be fine for me to explore on my own then.”

Now, Amaranzi dodged between the spruce and larch trees towards the swampy part of the taiga. Faster, faster, faster, faster! The wind blew in her favor and, with no signs of pursuit, she considered that she had successfully escaped her guardians for her bit of morning fun.

”You know what time it is?” she called over her shoulder. “It’s time for an adventure!”

That’s when she felt the fizz of passing between realms.

The hair along her spine stood at attention and she stopped, eyes darting and ears swiveling. It was just how her mother and Yirsar had described it: a tingle along her skin, a flush of blood, a sense of something…other.

She was still in a swampy area, definitely a taiga, but closer to the water and some trees were…pink.

Amranzi trotted closer to the water where a quadruped figure stood, half turned away from her. Was it a horse? No. This one had more body sections than a horse. Its top half was a human. It was holding a fishing net.

A centaur?

Amranzi edged closer, following the centaur's line of sight in the water. There were shadows under there! If only she could make out what they were. She moved closer—

Tthe black mist creeping in from the south stole her attention instead.

It was heading straight for the centaur woman.

”Run!” Amranzi raced towards the figure in the water. “It’s coming, run!"
